Oh, Cheery, you will have a wonderful time.
I will be arriving later in the month. Too bad we couldn't have arranged to run into each other at the museum!
I had planned to visit the British Museum. I haven't decided if I will attend the exhibition since there's so much else I want to do, but figure I should get tickets ahead of time for sure.

htmb - how funny, the first time I went to London with friends (1994) we stayed in the Bayswater area ! (Well that was our tube stop and we had to walk a couple of minutes to get to our tiny hotel) Last time I went with my Cowboy to London (May 2010) I actually paid the entrance fee for St. Paul's and I climbed the tower. While I thought personally it was worth it for me (he was waiting downstairs in a cafe) they don't allow photos in St. Pauls nor at Westminster Abbey (that I only remember from 1994) which is normally a deal breaker for me. St. Pauls is magnificent inside though but I am too much of a chicken to try to disobey ;-) The one thing we did in 2010 was visit Wimbledon and the All England Tennis Club which was amazing. But we are BIG tennis fans so it made sense for us ! Stairs to the top of St. Pauls

For the first time, I saw 'The Monument' next to the Monument tube stop and therefore saw that it was possible to walk up to the top, after buying a ticket of course. Just looking at the column made me feel claustrophobic, but it did not seem to be mobbed with visitors either.

I will have to look at the Monument before I decide. Tight space AND height. Sounds delightful

I've heard that London can be very foggy. Are you sure you will be able to take pictures there?

Oh you wicked tease, kerouac. htmb, I missed parts of this thread until today. You asked about phone apps. I have a couple of public transport apps for London which I find I don't actually use much, though a newcomer might find Pubtran useful. A neighbour of mine developed "Where is the bus" ( pageunderconstruction.co.uk), which tells you what buses are coming next for any given stop (handy if you're sitting watching the rain, trying to judge when to time a run to the bus stop); but if you're actually at a bus stop, you can get the same info just by texting the number of the stop displayed on the post: www.tfl.gov.uk/termsandconditions/20914.aspx#page-link-1--about-the-service

Thanks for the information, Patrick.
We will have to see which city registers the most rain while I'm on my trip: London or Paris

htmb - don't forget that we're going to meet up! I'm counting on it! Where shall I take you? what would you like me to show you? I think we should go on a boat down the Thames to the O2 arena passing many historic sites/sights on the way. What do you think?

If you do the river trip, which I thoroughly recommend, keep an eye out for a riverside pub a mile or so upstream of Tower Bridge. On the left is the Prospect of Whitby, named after a barge which was abandoned on the foreshore. Here was where pirates were executed in the good old days. Nothing so bar baric as hanging. They were staked out on the foreshore between the high and low tide marks. If they were still alive after three tides they were pardoned. That pub was where I would spend my pay when I lived in Dr Barnados just round the corner in 1949. I called in there some years ago now, the clientele has changed from dockers to yuppies. But they still had the old zinc topped bar, however, as I told them, the parrot in its cage had flown.

I hope I won't disappoint, Mich. Mossie, I will certainly look for that pub. Today I unearthed my password and euros, and also ordered a few British Pounds from my bank so I will have a little pocket change upon arrival and won't need to immediately look for an ATM.

To give you an idea of the Monument, they have a very informative website. It shows images from a panoramic camera, and will give a 24 hour runthough. Fascinating to watch the sun and moon rising and setting and the traffic whizzing about. www.themonument.info/views-from-the-monument.html

The time lapse images are great, If you ride all the way to putney or are in the area at all , I can also recommend a place to eat, close to East Putney tube. Prince of Wales www.foodandfuel.co.uk/our-pubs/prince-of-wales-putney/We had a great meal here - it is a gastro pub but has two distinct areas; next to the dining area is a great bar area for locals to meet. I would actually travel to eat here again when I am next in London cos it was so good. It is part of a small chain of pubs, " Food and Fuel"( links to them on the web site) some much closer to where you are staying, I am not sure what the quality of the food is like in the others, although they do seem to get good reviews.
