I think it would be fine if questions were answered by more than one person. And we could even go back to a past question and answer that instead of the last one. So as not to confuse matters - we could just bold or italic the question we are answering at that time.

If you were obliged to marry a famous historical person, who would it be?
That's a difficult one. I have no one person in mind. But I am drawn to very intellectual men, so it would be someone who could challenge me, fascinate me and someone I could learn from. I really think the mind is the most attractive thing about a person. And if you add compassion, kindness and courage to that mix, you have one great person.
If there is one charity you could work for full time, which one would it be?

I have never worked for anything but non-profit organizations. For my current job the pay is so low in our state I often feel I do a lot of it as charity work, even though I'm passionate about what I do. I suppose if I were to retire I would dedicate a lot of my time to wildlife and water conservation.
What are the qualities you value the most in your closest friend?

I value the honesty and sense of justice of my closest friend but wish sometimes that a few other qualities were more regularly evident.
Have you ever slapped anyone?

Not that I can recall, though I think I'd remember if I had slapped someone.
I do remember being slapped in the face myself at age 11. It was the only time my mother ever hit me and I remember the place I was standing and what I said to stir up such an angry response. I also know she was surprised at her reaction and felt pretty guilty. I had told her my purchase of cheap, rhinestone horseshoe jewelry pins at the Five and Dime, "Neisners," was "none of her business."
Is there a sport you like to follow and/or play?

I like to play volleyball, it's a real good workout. The other sports I participate in involve vehicles of one sort or another and the not to dainty side of me haha... What can I say? I've always been just of the boys really. What do forums like this do for you? How and why are they important in your everyday life?

Have you ever slapped anyone?
I once slapped a boyfriend of mine before, because he was mouthing off at me. I slapped him across his face real hard. But I know I only did it because I knew for sure I'd get away with it. He was a big guy, the kind that gets banned from pubs and picks fights with boxers, a real hard nut. ( And this he had done plus much more). What did he do after I slapped him? Nothing, just looked at me real surprised. I still feel bad about it to this day. Apart from getting into fights with my sisters when I was younger, I have never hit anyone, it's just not in me to do. The exception being if anyone hurt or threatened me or someone I cared about, then they wouldn't be left standing. My dad was a wrestler remember? A professional fighter. I learnt a thing or two... ;D

Do you practice what you preach?
I try to yes. But I also try not to 'preach'. I found it doesn't work. Living by good example really is the best way to show someone what is right and what is not, how to gain morals and be a good person generally. Especially when it comes to our kids. I have to mind what I do, as I know my kids are looking on. If they don't respect me and know that I live by certain standards, then what initiative will they have to do so?

Forums like AnyPort are such a new innovation in my life. I find that I get obsessed for a few days and then forget about even going into my study for the next couple of days. I love the anonymity of the people I "converse" with and love to hear the stories from around the world! I have often thought "what the heck did we all do before this techno gadget?"
Do you like to be surprised by visitors or forewarned?

I resent even the pizza delivery guy when he shows up. If you show up unannounced at my doorstep, then I will not be home. My home is just not my castle but my refuge. I live surrounded my thousands of people in highrises on all sides, but I hide away and enjoy it. I'll meet you for coffee anytime, though. If money was no object and you had a fair income without work, what would you do?

Post by htmb on Dec 4, 2013 20:38:07 GMT
I'd travel, and spend more time with family members and friends who live far away from me. Take better care of my health; get more exercise and spend more time outdoors. I'd dedicate more time to learning photography, practicing French, and writing, and I'd try to get out on the water at least once a week. If money were really no object, I'd also buy a little retreat somewhere near the water, and I'd try using some of my skills to help others through volunteer efforts. OR, maybe I'd just lie on the couch all day, drink wine, eat bon bons, and surf the Internet. ;D
What job would you consider a personal "dream" job (for the past, present or future)?
|
|
|
Post by Deleted on Dec 4, 2013 21:01:32 GMT
I fear to admit that I never had any dream job in mind, because I never liked to work, just as I never liked going to school. I don't know why, since I was good excellent at both of those activities.
If anything could have been chosen, I would have been a good diplomat or journalist. I have not yet given up on writing, except for laziness.

Kerouac, my educated guess is that you were bored, both at school and in your job, because your high intellect, curious nature, and obvious skills were not challenged.

Question:
2013 is nearly over. How will you remember this year? The high points, the low points. Your thoughts?

Post by htmb on Dec 7, 2013 17:25:42 GMT
For me personally, 2013 has been a great year. My family members are, for the most part, happy, healthy and thriving. Professionally, I couldn't have been better. Work has gone as it should this year. I was able to have a wonderful travel experience last summer, and I'm in the process of planning a new trip for 2014. My social life could use some improvement, but that doesn't worry me too much. I have a small group of close friends, and have also made some new and interesting acquaintances along the way.
September was a very dismal month for me since that's when I had the health scare and also had to euthanize my cat, but things have been getting back on track since. Some aspects of life haven't been so great, but I choose to look forward, not back. Now, as I become older, I feel like I'm in a race to cram in as much as I can, while I can still energetically function. I know I am very fortunate, but also know I've made some good choices in life that have helped to keep life headed along a good path. Hopefully, 2014 will be more of the same, but one never knows.
This is a good question. I would prefer to leave it open in case someone else would also like to respond.

2013 has been a year of flux for me and most issues are not yet resolved. I aspire to a year of complete tranquility for a change, but I don't know if I will ever get one.

I'm urgently waiting for my Air miles to pile up and have enough to upgrade to two Business Class seats!! I'm trying to whack my credit card so hard it goes limp with exhaustion..... only thing is I hope the Xmas spending spirit in my shop helps me to pay it off ;D
Do you ever feel that time has accelerated leaving you wondering where the heck the past year went? Especially when the Xmas decorations are the same as last year's giving you a sense of being back at the starting gates!

In one word - busy! But productive and interesting. I finally did my trip around India, something that I had been wanting to do for the longest time and been planning for the last two years. Came back and haven't really stopped since then. With the winter now here, my life does seem to be slowing down a bit more more, which is a good thing. But there is still a lot going on. I'm looking forward to 2014. It will be another busy year but in many ways a turning point in my life. It's going to be an interesting year.
I leave the last two questions open for someone else.

Yes, I have reached the age group now where the year goes by in a blur, except for the bad moments. I knew this would happen since I always heard old people talking about it, and I don't like it one bit.
If somebody told you they would finance a spectacular fireworks display of your choice, what event would you choose to commemorate?

I would like to have a spectacular lightshow commemorating all of the philosophers of the Enlightenment: Voltaire, Spinoza, Rousseau, Hume, Lock, Paine, etc. It was the dawning of the concepts of free will and human rights, and I fear we have lost our way.

Yes, if I feel strongly about an issue. In fact, I recently did just that when I signed a petition requesting an issue be put on our next state election ballot. Though I signed a hardcopy form, my name will be put into public record and made electronically available.

If you found a $20 note on the floor in a parking lot, what would you do with it?

Now, as I become older, I feel like I'm in a race to cram in as much as I can, while I can still energetically function. [/b][/quote] I feel exactly the same way! Sometimes I get almost panicky about what I want to do and see first on my overseas travels. I started travelling quite late in life - I was 36 before I took my very first trip to Europe and Israel. Years went by as I raised my children but took a final 'husband & wife only' trip to South and North America when my son was four. After that we have traveled as a family until my son turned 21 and we made our last trip as a family to America. I've tried to get to Europe every year but didn't make it in 2011 and this year. That worried me as I count that as a huge "lost time"! When we do travel I make sure we stay for the longest period possible. If I found a $20 note I would look to see if someone if backtracking to find it and if no-one then it's a case of 'finders keepers'!

This year has gone past really really fast ,yes! I decorated the tree today, and it make me wonder about how this year has just whizzed by. I understand exactly what you mean Tod. It also makes you think about life and just how short it really is. It makes you wonder about how many years you have left on this earth. I might be a bit strange, but I do ponder about such things. And then I get to thinking of all the things that I want to do and have not done yet. So, I set myself goals and I think (and sometimes write down) all the things I want to do and want to see and want to achieve before I kick the bucket.
Do you believe that people really can fall in love at first sight?

|
|
Post by htmb on Dec 15, 2013 1:59:54 GMT
The romantic side of me wants to say, "Yes, of course."
However, the practical side believes that if a strong attraction turns into real love, trust and commitment, then it was due initially more to luck and a physical connection, followed by perseverance and relationship development.
Real love at first sight is something I haven't personally experienced.
Have you ever had a phobia you were able to overcome?

Not being a good swimmer, I have always been very afraid of deep water, and I also am quite claustrophobic. It has not been a problem to avoid being in deep water (even though I am uncomfortable on a ship in the middle of the ocean), but I have regularly found myself in claustrophobic situations. However, I have managed to avoid freaking out in public even when I was screaming inside. The most important thing for me is to be able to move, even just a tiny bit. I have an extremely vivid memory of being on a bus in Laos which carried more than twice as many passengers than could fit in, and I really regretted having a seat, because when you are standing, there is always a way to wriggle. Crammed into that seat, I was ready to go amok and kill everybody around me. I closed my eyes and tried to put everything into perspective. After a minute or two, I saw that I could move my knees just a little bit, which relieved me enough to stand the 10 hour trip.
As for love at first sight, I wasn't sure that I believed in it until I introduced a couple to each other... at Disneyland Paris ;D ;D ;D The next day, I received messages from both of them about their extreme attraction to each other but what was so funny was that it took me almost a week to convince them that the feeling was reciprocal and that I wasn't just fucking with their heads. They are still together more than 15 years later.
If Santa Claus really existed, what is the best possible thing that he could bring you?
