I have a loved one who will soon be visiting South Sudan with a very small group of educators. I'm beginning to learn about about the country via various Internet sites. If anyone has information about the country I hope you will share it here. Perhaps, as I learn from R, I will also be able to eventually post a story or two. I am excited for R and know this will be a valuable learning experience for him, but also have safety concerns mostly because this country is basically unknown to me.

Wow, a trip to the youngest country in the world (as we wait for the Republic of Scotland). I'm impressed.

I imagine it's pretty hard to impress you, so traveling there must be a really big deal.

Can you imagine that I even had a plane ticket for Juba -- with my parents! -- at one time? It was not used because we ended up on a direct flight to Nairobi.

I will learn more about the travel arrangements soon, but it sounds like getting there is going to be extremely complicated.

There are not a whole lot of airlines serving Juba at the moment. Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways would be the most reliable.

All plans have been made and I suspect there will be quite a bit of traveling outside Juba, thus the complicated details.

My dear one was supposed to leave for South Sudan shortly after the first of the year, but there has been an attempted coup in the country. Reports out of Juba are listing an estimated 400 to 500 dead, and over 20,000 people have taken refuge with the UN in Juba. The United States government have ordered its citizens to leave the country immediately. ABC News

I was reading that as well and immediately thought of this thread of course. Even if the coup attempt had not occurred, the Sudan as a whole was always troubled with uprisings. After the South Sudan split away, it was probably wishful thinking to believe that it would calm the situation. There are too many natural resources and too much greed in the area for things to be peaceful.

I was concerned something like this would happen while he was there, so to say I am relieved the trip has been canceled (delayed?) is quite an understatement.

We were just discussing this very thing.
