Patrick, I agree with your take on the new Upstairs Downstairs and Downton Abbey.
I appreciated the breeziness of Upstairs but just didn't care much about the characters. I did care about the characters of Downton Abbey, till suddenly I had had it with the whole batch of them, for which I of course blame the writer.
Keeley Hawes was a pleasure to watch in The Moonstone (costume drama) and also in Wives and Daughters (also nice costumes).
Bixa, for lovely costumes of the 20s, the Phryne Fisher series from Australia is one to watch.

I looked up Keely Hawes and after only reading the Wikipedia entry & seeing her picture there, like her better already! Thank you, Patrick.
Mentally bookmarked the two movies you mention, Breeze, but am positively sick with gratitude over the series recommendation. Mysteries and period dress? Be still my heart! (but only two seasons?)
In a few minutes I'll watch the final episode of U/D II with a song in my heart, knowing that yet more costume goodies await me.

Hmmm. Patrick, since I watch p*rate tv, I am a broad who can watch shows from abroad. So, to be fair I will find something else with her in it so that I can give a more balanced judgment. She was in the very early episodes of Spooks (sold in the US as MI5), much praised in Line of Duty, and the overloud shouty wife in A Casual Vacancy (though overall it wasn't that good a programme). I am a-quiver with anticipation, mild dread, and more than a little sorrow. It's ending! How can it end?! The 2015 Christmas Special, also known as The Finale, is the holiday episode of the sixth series of Downton Abbey. It is the final episode of the sixth series and serves as the finale for the entire show. It will be set between July 25 and December 31, 1925. It will air on December 25th, 2015 in the UK, and on February 28th, 2016 in the US. It will be approximately two hours long and will air at 8:45pm on ITV on Christmas Day, 2015.

Well, there went a brand new box of Kleenex! It's over. It is o-o-o-o-o-ver. I can't believe it. No spoilers from me, but re: the Grand Finale I will just say oo eee, oo, ah ah. <-- all apply.

Okay, this time I lasted through about 30 minutes of an episode, trying my best to give it a chance. I'm sure it is a very old episode since it was playing on one of the grade D cable channels. One of the major events was some old servant upset about her engagement to some other employee after suddenly realising that conjugal relations might be required. And everybody seems to be dithering about one thing or another, except for the really mean characters who prefer to crush people who are dithering. Definitely not for me.

What some people call dithering, others would call consideration of all sides of a question. Sheesh.
