The EU has voted to impose universal chargers for all of our electronic equipment -- telephones, tablets, laptops, cameras, readers etc. All of the manufacturers must conform by 2017, but Apple is trying to resist. Nevertheless, the new rules will save millions of euros of money and plenty of resources, while emptying out plenty of our drawers. Even hoarders will have no reason to hang on their old chargers when one size fits all. Here are a few details.

Seems commonsense enough doesn't it although a lot of new stuff like my newest camera is equipped with USB charging capability which is already universal.

Yes, anything with a USB charger is fine -- but most stuff purposely doesn't have it, particularly all Apple products.

Oh, I don't know. I can charge my ipad and my ipod from a USB.

What counts is both ends of a charger being compatible. Any device that has a special plug at one end needs its own charger. Just imagine the waste for those of us who have 5 more devices with each one needing its own cords and plugs for charging.
In the future, in Europe I suppose that everything will be sold with an optional charger because there will be no reason to buy 5 times the same thing.
Just imagine if every electrical device in your house needed a different socket to plug it in -- one for the TV, one for the washing machine, one for the lamp, one for the radio, one for the fan... That is what they are doing to us with this other stuff.

Even where a device has a socket supposedly of a common standard of some kind (e.g., mini-USB), it turns out to be a bit loose for a supposedly universal charger's plug, meaning I have to use all sorts of contrivances to get it to take a charge (and that's to say nothing about output voltages, amperages and all the other physics of electrical currents that I've forgotten all about).
