I watched all 2 hours and 43 minutes of this today. Incredibly kinky and pretentious, but I mean that in a good way -- more films need to push the limits. I see that it has an "18" certificate in the UK whereas in France, it is only restricted to those over the age of 12. I know quite a few 12 year olds who would not be able to handle that movie!
And yes, there are moments that are abominably bad, but the good parts are really good, as is the whole look of the movie.

I've heard there are quite a few moments of blue cock.

Children know what those are (not blue ones however) -- about 50% of them have one. I certainly never mind it if children see bodily parts.
Of course, in this movie quite a few bodies are taken apart in shocking ways, and that is more what is hard to handle.

So, is the 12 certificate a good or bad thing ?

I think that if I were in charge, I might move the age to 14 -- but only if forced to continue the certificate system. I think that parents should have sufficient control over their children (or sufficient trust in them) to take care of such matters themselves without some outside authority making the decision. Some children are extremely mature at age 10 and others are unready for the facts of life at age 16.

I agree (and you've no IDEA how much it hurt to say that...!)
My daughter (12 now) has seen a few 18 certificates, but they've all been fine as far as I'm concerned, and appropriate for her tastes and sensitivities.
