That kind of service, where things don't come out on time or not in proper sequence is unforgivable, especially in a seafood restaurant.
Even if someone else is paying, I find it hard to enjoy food that is too expensive.

So how many times have you tried to duplicate that since then, Mich? It sounds sort of like an upside-down cake that was left right-side up. Also sounds delicious. Yes Bixa, it was like an upside-down cake. My sister used to bake the most delicious pineapple upside-down cake! I am not a baker otherwise I would be attempting it!

Whatagain, that is probably the reason that I prefer the cheapest restaurants possible. When I am disappointed, it is totally normal. But quite often the service and food are far better than one has any right to expect, and it makes it all worth the gamble.

Expect the worst and be surprised not to get it can be a motto ;-)

Kerouac, I've eaten in some really horrible restaurants though...

But it's worse when you pay a good bit for a place with a fancy facade and then get disappointed.

Some of the worst meals I've eaten have created some of the best memories -- things to still laugh about years later.

I'm not much of a pizza person, but would definitely try that artichoke/truffle combination! Mussels & fries in Paris ~ can you say "perfection"? Night before last went to a ballet at 6:30, so came out well ready for supper. We took the path of least resistance & went to the zócalo, sometimes an iffy proposition for food. We both had sopa Azteca, a lovely version & the restaurant had the good sense to serve the garnishes on the side. We also split an order of indifferent fries which were okay when hot while we waited for the soup.

Burgers at a marcel burger - seems like a chain in Belgium. Burger was ok they assorti it with a beer. Loud. My wife hates burgers and I am not a fan. But we wanted to see our daughter who started working there 2 days ago as head waitress. We didn't tip her. Ingrained behaviour of never tipping I guess.
(We tipped the toiletter who took care of our dog though. Not very consequent.).

don't know if that counts as a meal, nor if the place counts as a restaurant if they only serve things like fries and sausages and cake ... but after our hike, a. and i shared a freshly baked waffel with ice cream and cherries ...

2 days ago I had an excellent meal in Compiegne. Typical of 'province' vs paris : better more elaborate for less money. Tonight we dine in Le Touquet.

on tuesday, for our anniversary, we went to the tamil restaurant where we also had our wedding celebration (the celebration for the civil ceremony, a year after the church wedding in kerala). i had some chicken dish with porrota. somehow, when i put the porota on my plate, i automatically started eating with my hand. hope people didn't think i was being weird.
today, we went out for sushi together with my mom. we got a big plate with lots of different sushi to share, this time, and a. (who was a bit over excited and thus a bit annoying anyway) complained about not getting her own plate of sushi, as she usually does.

Italian restaurant in suburb of Düsseldorf. Well noted on trip advisor and also the only one within walking distance of the hotel. Quite avoidable.

By the way, whatagain, I agree about Paris vs province. Even in Lyon, as long as one avoids Bocuse, the note for the excellent food is lighter than in Paris.
I spent a month there doing history research, so of course no budget for Bocuse, but friends indicated and sometimes took me to excellent small restaurants.
Too bad your restaurant was a dud.

After a ok but not more restaurant in Honfleur - where queen Elizabeth had a lunch in 2004 - but never a Belgian king which says it all about food in the U.K. ;-) we had our first good one in Saint Malo. Assiette de fruits de mer - seafood platter and then a magret - duck followed by a kouin Amman (sp ?) delicious. Wine was a Reuilly from Loire. Hips.

Excellent Japanese meal in the northern Marais tonight. Standard multi-varietal sushi for me and a rice bowl topped with salmon tartare and sliced avocado for my friend visiting from Guatemala. I think he is beginning to despair of the food there.

Excellent Japanese meal in the northern Marais tonight. Standard multi-varietal sushi for me and a rice bowl topped with salmon tartare and sliced avocado for my friend visiting from Guatemala. I think he is beginning to despair of the food there. A reminder to appreciate what we have and to remember those countries that are struggling. Tonight we went to our restaurant down the road for their Saturday night special which tonight was "Ukrainian Night". I enjoyed borscht soup, the first time I have ever had it, delicious! I will be attempting to make some very soon and will be researching recipes tomorrow. That was followed by cabbage rolls and perogies. It was a very filling and satisfying meal. I will be on my treadmill in the morning!

Ha ha on the treadmill after that big, delicious-sounding meal, Mich. I'd love to hear about your borscht when you make it. I made some around this time last year and looked at lots of recipes before proceeding, plus sought advice. Look here, the posts from #42 through #47: anyportinastorm.proboards.com/post/285720/thread

Aubergine does nothing for me but on the menu of the Spanish restaurant below our apartment was aubergine millefeule(sp). It was described as a stack ofaubergine with spinach, carrot puree, nuts and raisins. It was served with a sugared aubergine slice at each corner and was drizzled with balsamic vinegar.
It was stunning!

work christmas party at a vietnamese restaurant yesterday. interestingly decorated place - with tables with plastic sheets, and plastic seats, and a sun umbrella and everything kind of made to look like at a street stall ... the bathrooms had lots of decorations too (made of empty beer bottles and plastic flowers and plastic fish, and in front of them there was this thing with incense and a loud speaker voice saying the same sentence over and over). lots of different food. i tried a small bowl of fried silk worms, just out of curiousity, they were so-so, and i had some steamed sweet potato and a kind of burger (made from a dumpling and meet and a mango slice and other things inside), which was quite nice ...

I had supper last night at a celebrated restaurant in Mexico City with a long-time patron of the place. Alas, the chef recently departed for an opportunity elsewhere. I was fairly well satisfied with the large assortment of imaginative and mostly quite good food we ordered, but my friend was disappointed, as she could tell none of it was up to the usual high standard.
Today we ate at a hugely popular taco place (Tacos Chupacabra), which appeared to have a continuous line of eager patrons. Along with the usual serve-yourself array of salsas, pickled onions & chiles, etc. were such items as really yummy whipped potatoes, beans, & nopales ......... but no utensils! I channeled Tantalus and I attempted to get those potatoes to my mouth using the plastic straw from my liter-sized agua de alfalfa.

How strange! Do people eat everything with their hands (fine for tacos, but not those other things) or are diners expected to take their own cutlery?
Hope you've had a good time in the huge city...

Never encountered anything like it before. Mashed potatoes offered in the condiment section! The place was a hoot, though, and the tacos were fabulous. For a dollar, you get a liter of fresh "agua" (-ade), in a big variety of choices. I had alfalfa & my friend had melon. I would know to take a spoon or fork were I too revisit.
Yes, having a fabulous time, thank you -- went to the Frida Kahlo house today.

It was a beautiful quiet Christmas day in Oaxaca, and I was not eager to leave the house, nor was the person with whom I'd tentatively planned lunch. Mainly we were not even lukewarmly enthusiastic about the choices of restaurants open that day. At the last minute someone said El Tendajón was open. My friend said she'd tried & liked it. I was most pleasantly surprised! The menu was imaginative and what I had (pesca del día) was sublime -- a piece of tuna perfectly prepared, beautifully pink inside, tender and fresh tasting. There is a nice selection of craft beer and the service is very good. I was most surprised by the prices, which were far less than one would expect. I see the prices have been raised since the menu pictures on tripadvisor were taken, but not by much. I paid 25 pesos more than shown in the picture -- a whopping dollar & 27 cents. www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g150801-d12506461-Reviews-El_Tendajon_Agaveria-Oaxaca_Southern_Mexico.html
