One of the local television magazines recently made a study of the countries mentioned in television news reports on the 4 principal French TV stations but excluding France, and here is what the world looks like seen through French TV. imageshack.com/a/img855/9407/rbn7.jpgThey also checked which French cities are mentioned the most, excluding Paris, and the ranking is Marseille, Lyon, Lille, Strasbourg, Nantes. However, Toulouse was #1 in 2012 due to the murders of French soldiers and Jewish schoolchildren and a teacher that year. It would be fascinating to match this with other countries' interests.

I almost get the impression that you get more US coverage than we do, right next door. And of course there is US coverage here, the opposite would be strange. I guess the Mali and Syria coverage are because of the dire things going on there. There is surprisingly little about Ukraine and Russia. Although we are across the pond, we have a lot of news about that, above all because there are many Canadians, in particular on the Prairies, from Ukraine and from a lesser extent Russia (who else would move to those frozen steppes)?
Especially in Québec (being Latin-speaking and American, and in NAFTA) we probably get more Latin American coverage than you do, but I haven't happened upon a chart.

I'm a bit surprised to see the Vatican there.

That is become of the new Pope, who seems far more human than the old Pope.

This is interesting, too, albeit a bit old.

Other than the World Cup these days, I find the French news doesn't cover Latin America at all. Maybe the occasional item about Brazil. And despite the language ties, Canada is barely a blip on the radar screen.
I think all countries are mostly interested in themselves.
