Avignon does not at all have a monopoly on saints in street corner niches of residential buildings, far from it. You can see them just about everywhere in Europe, even in Paris. Nevertheless, it is true that one tends to find greater quantities along the southern rim of Europe. More often than not, it is the Virgin Mary who is depicted, but there is no specific rule about who is best suited to protect the residents from evil. While the saint is there to protect the entire street, there are a few buildings that are not on corners where it was considered prudent to fit in a saint anyway. Anyway, I enjoyed hunting down a number of them last week as I wandered the Streets of the city.

Some of the saint statues are really quite lovely, but I like the humor of the demon-looking "saint." I wouldn't imagine one would find guardian saints in too many other French towns.

Was it you who added the extra bit to Number 3. And is there a stone statue roaming the streets, never heard of Saint Mobile

You noticed it, too.

That little BVM behind bars must indicate that more that one statue was stolen from that niche. But other unprotected statues are obviously centuries older.

Poor BVM; I was wondering why she was in jail.

It was in Troyes that I noticed that almost all of them were behind bars.
