I'm so sorry you lost your introduction, bjd. These photos are wonderful! You caught much of the pedestrian and kayak action just right. There's so much to see in your photos, but I certainly need more information about feeding muskrats!!!! Really?

Many of the German cities remind me of a lot of the cities in Normandy and the Nord-Pas de Calais because they were completely destroyed and then rebuilt starting around 1950, salvaging here and there bits and pieces of the old city (or recreating them) whenever it was possible.
Those cakes in the case look deadly. It makes me think that Germans visiting France must have to buy 3 or 4 French pastries to get an equivalent quantity of what they are used to.

htmb, we were surprised at the muskrats too. That was beside a little river just close to the house we stayed in. Every evening, people would come with their kids and feed the muskrats. I guess it was also the season when there were a lot of young ones. During the day, there were very few visible. Makes a change from taking your kids to feed the ducks in the park. I didn't actually have a good cake, only an average one, despite the fact that generally I find German cakes better than French ones. Cheaper too. I did buy some Leipzig specialty cakes with marzipan inside to bring home. More information that I can possible provide here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leipzig, which I found while looking to see how much Leipzig was destroyed in the war.

Bjd, I can only imagine those muskrats would reproduce much faster and become more of a problem than the geese I photographed at a Parc Floral.

bjd, gorgeous, thanks. It brought back a lot of memories. Yes, the mixture of the old an the new was what I remembered most from my time there.

In post #16, it looks like some Iron Agers showed up, 1,500 years late. And, wow, the world's oldest goth. Who knew?

This is brilliant, bjd! You have done a very nice job of capturing portraits and street scenes.
Some of the outfits are quite interesting.

I think this kind of thing is much more possible in Germany than in France or Italy. The Germans were generally really tolerant and accepting of it all. No particular staring, the shops downtown selling lots of black clothes for the occasion. People of all ages with cameras asking the Goths if they could take pictures. The only ones I saw who looked rather overwhelmed were these: but they were probably tourists.

Lizzy -- your term "Iron Agers" -- is that a real movement? I have never heard it before and a quick google doesn't bring it up.

Goths didn't yet exist when I was in school, but I have seen tons of movies and TV series since then that always show the Goths as the outcasts who are ridiculed by all of the other groups. This must be sweet revenge for them all. There are actually lots of Goth gatherings in France, not to mention the annual Hellfest that just took place last month next to Nantes.

Great set of photos of a city I know next to nothing about but looks well worth visiting. I feel your pain about the lack of preview here. It makes things difficult and scary--at least for me. I'm not sure why preview functionality is seen as such a problem to implement as most other BBs don't have any problem with it, and in fact most never have. It obviously doesn't require a coding genius to get right.
I really want to spend some time in Germany rather than just passing through going somewhere else. I am very fond of the Germans I know and have a suspicion it would appeal to me. Germans remind me of Americans--or what Americans would be if we were better educated.

No, bjd, the term "Iron Agers" doesn't exist, I just thought they looked like they wandered off some 7th century landholding, perhaps coming into town for the fair. They certainly interpreted the term "goth" differently than the others. They're Visigoths, or Ostrogoths, perhaps.

Lizzy, from what I have been told, there are various currents within the movement. They are not all dressed in black and looking creepy. I even spotted some women who looked as though they were wearing white wedding dresses. I was in the streetcar and my camera was turned off and in my bag, so I didn't have time to get a decent picture. I'll post it anyway to give you an idea of the different trends. Fumobici, I'm sure you would enjoy Germany. I have only started going there in the past few years, but really like the atmosphere, find the people quite friendly, the food good, prices reasonable. Years ago, I spent some time in Munich and have no desire to go back there, but I like what I have seen of the eastern part and Berlin. Actually, when we first arrived and saw the centre, I wondered how we would fill 5 days because it didn't look very interesting. But, in fact, as you start to wander around, and get out of the very centre, then it starts to grow on you and you find areas that are fun to visit, just sitting with a beer and watching people go by. I also enjoy the quirky shop decorations, the flowers everywhere. When we were there, the linden trees were in bloom and it smelled really nice. And it was quiet since so many people are on bikes (at least in summer). And it has streetcars, which are my favourite form of urban transport. There used to be a preview function here. I wrote a long introduction, posted the first picture and previewed to see if it had appeared correctly. When I tried to go back, it all disappeared.

Before commenting on this knock-out of a thread, let me say that I reeeeally feel your pain about the pain-in-the-ass, barely working "preview" feature of this totally sucko "improved" version of proboards we now suffer. I try to remember to copy any post before attempting to preview, for what that's worth. Also, sometimes when the whole thing just disappears, I am offered a draft when I return to the thread, although that's not a sure bet either. At any rate, if you feel like trying to recreate the intro, I know everyone would love to read it.What a beautiful city, beautifully captured in your pictures. I really love how the modern buildings are integrated with the old, cheerfully acknowledging & celebrating both styles. As a girl from Louisiana, I share the girl from Florida's reaction to the muskrat feeding! (okay, I'm not sure if she felt disgust & horror, too.)Reply #3 -- kid musicians! I'm positive one of your other threads also features young musicians. It's becoming one of your specialties. I always love the way you show the places you've been, with the quirky & fun stuff, of course along with the monumental and the pretty. You take such good architecture photos, too.

No horror or disgust from Florida. Just curiosity. I actually had some large burrows pointed out to me in the city of Paris where rodents of that size live, so perhaps they feed them there, too. I too like the way you have included such interesting looking people, or people doing interesting things, in your posts, bjd. I'm not one for dressing up, but one or two of the non-traditional goth outfits would appeal to me if I found myself going to a goth ball. What did you wear?
