The trouble with looking at these marvelous photographs over and over again is that I want to be in a dozen different places all at the same time during my visit. I want to see it all. This desperate feeling has not left me even after nearing my 17th visit.

The thing that strikes me the most is how clean cut everybody looks -- the 3-day beard had not yet been invented, nor the "straight-out-of-bed" hair style.

Brilliant Kerouac! I do notice that the suitcase trolley was used in Gare de l"Est in those days. I am possibly wrong but have never noticed this piece of equipment at any of the train stations in Paris.

Our new Roma (and other) residents found them much too useful for their personal use and all of the trolleys disappeared about ten years ago.

Funny that you find everyone cleancut, Kerouac -- other than some of the haircuts and the occasional piece of clothing, I didn't find people looked all that different to now.

Looking at these latest pictures makes me want to be in Paris, even though most of the time I have no desire to go there.

Catching up to this thread and finally seeing the wonderful pictures in #215 -- 36 years ago!
All of the "regular" turning back the clock pictures are a treat as well. I marvel at how varied and interesting you keep making this views of Paris.

One thing I really hated in the early 1980s was the huge shoulders on women's (and men's) clothes. Along with other friends, I always removed them.
What was "Au gagne petit"? Was it a shop for low-wage workers, some kind of credit union, or...?
I've often seen those old signs for water or gas on all storeys. Meaning, of course, that people on the higher, less desirable levels didn't even have plumbing, though it existed.

I always removed them, too, LaGatta, but only from my own clothes.

I thought the gas and water signs on buildings were to tell firemen (among others) that there was gas on all the floors of the building, in case of some kind of fire or other emergency.

Actually, the gas and water signs were to inform people (possible tenants) what a superbly equipped building it was, even in the service rooms at the top of the building.
