I was hoping I could get a shot of a flared crest, too. Maybe next time.

Oh htmb - poor thing
Fantastic photos- love the heron and houses, the pelican and I am so jealous of your Woodpecker picture, I have tried & failed all Summer /Autumn to capture a good shot woodpecker who visits my garden

Two Sundays ago we decided to pack a picnic lunch and head for the Natal midlands. It was a glorious day and decided to drive past our local water supply, namely Midmar Dam. To our delight it was in full spate and attracting a lot of bird action as the water flowed into to river bed. Here we spotted a Jackal Buzzard doing what Jackal Buzzards do....sitting perched on the overhead wires. Managed to get a shot as he took off.

Oh, that's great, almost as though that bird had wingtip sensors to check for things under the water.

@ htmb Yes, those are storks. I don't know which variety. They live in large numbers in southern Spain and Portugal. That's where the pics were taken.

Not only the size of their nests but also the location of their nests. The largest nests were seen on a series of pylon poles along the highway. An amazing view!

Those storks had almost completely disappeared from Alsace in the 1970's and 80's... and then they returned to put their nests on chimneys everywhere. Since they are one of the traditional symbols of Alsace, people had actually begun to put fake nests with plaster storks on certain chimneys.
