Birds are fascinating creatures, aren't they. It was in the act of plucking the fish out of the water while also taking off in flight. It's one of those "almost got it right" shots since it's a bit on the fuzzy side.

Those birds are probably doing calculus at the same time. "Dive and pick up fish vs. risk of an alligator suddenly jumping out of the water to eat me."

Probably just doesn't want to get its wings wet. Otherwise it'd end up with 'bed feathers', the avian equivalent of bed hair.

The photo was taken at Cedar Key in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, so probably no gators nearby.

The bird is greedy and flapping like mad to get extra lift to drag the fish out of the water

Brilliant picture, Amboseli!
Can you figure out what that piece of man-made material(?) is that is woven into the nest?

I think it's a sort of strap that they do around cardboard boxes. Amazing to see how they built their nest high in our wisteria.

Incredible Amboseli, did you find these on your own or did you get a guide? We had a guide in the National Park, he had a telescope and found us so many birds, snakes, insects and sloths that we would never have seen or identified on our own.

Thanks Mich. We found most on our own, along the rivers. There is an abundance of birds in Costa Rica. The only problem is to get a good shot of them. I must have another few that are taken with my husband's camera but they aren't on the computer yet.
In Manuel Antonio we also had a guide with a telescope. Amazing to see the details so close. Not so many birds in M.A., though. Many sloths, capuchin monkees and spider monkeys. Also hard to get on film!

Not so many birds in M.A. I wonder if it is because there are so many monkeys in the M.A. National Park? We had no difficulty getting photos of the capuchin monkeys, when we got to the ocean for lunch and a swim, there were many of them in the trees on the walkway to the water. We had a soft shell cooler that zipped up and we had brought sandwiches and granola bars for lunch, when we finished lunch we put the wrappings inside the cooler and zipped it up. By the time we walked the short distance to the water, the monkeys were into our cooler, we watched as one of them opened the zipper! We then watched another take a woman's bowl of fruit and scamper up a tree, ate the fruit and tossed the bowl to the ground. I seem to remember the guide mentioning studies about the unusual increases in the capuchin monkey population but can not fully remember what they determined. The howlers we heard in the morning and evening, a haunting call.

Yes, you have to watch out for the capuchin monkeys. They come very close. Here's my close-up of one of them. The howlers kept us awake almost all night in Cañas. Awful sound when there are a lot of them, and there were a lot of them in Hacienda La Pacifica!

Great photo!
I was surprised at how close some people physically got to them, most people respectfully stood back and took their photos, after all you can adjust your camera to get a pretty close up photos such as you show, but some people took unnecessary liberties, some people got a good swat, deservedly so.
