I remember seeing those same conical burners outside of Sacramento back in the sixties. The tule fog would reek of burning sawdust in the winter. This is a loving portrait of a very interesting place, thank you so much. Thank you very much for looking in, fumobici. Oh boy, that's a bad combination, tule fog and sawdust smoke. Bad for driving and breathing!

Your Daleks eye is a cyclone dust collector. I remember installing one on our first asphalt plant back in the dark ages. A powerful fan pushes the fumes from the wigwam through the cyclone and there they are spun by the shape so that the heavier particles are flung to the outside and then fall to the bottom where they have to be collected and disposed of. Not incredibly efficient but a cheap and practical solution, modern standards demand much better methods, at least the dust can generally be recycled back into the product.

James Dyson had one as a kid no doubt.

Diane, your mingling of personal history, the background of the town, and your superb photography makes for a lively and fascinating reading/viewing experience. Looking forward to additions to this and the promised cemetery pictures. Thank you!

Dyson - haha! So, there's a primitive, rusty Dyson vacuum cleaner in these wigwams? Cemetery coming up soon...

This is a real trip into what I can only describe as 'different' to anything I saw in the USA. Yes, A real eye-opener! Thank you for making this photo-essay a 'mystery thriller' for me at least! I got the creeps from those back alleys and wondered if you ever thought you might be surprised by somebody who could harm you? Looking forward to more Diane!

I'm a little on the fearless side, but I do occasionally feel spooked by "regular" people who are inexplicably angered by my picture-taking. It's not the kind of town that attracts tourists, so I must cause suspicion with my camera. Or something...I really can't figure out what the paranoia is about!

I do occasionally feel spooked by "regular" people who are inexplicably angered by my picture-taking. Oh, I certainly know all about that!

Me too, that's why I asked. We have huge numbers of illegals...hence the camera shy story. They don't know who or what we represent so stay very cautious.

Oh, it's nice to know I'm not alone kerouac! I thought it was just the town I live in. lola, thanks so much! tod2, the friendliest people here are the Mexican immigrants. It's the "white folks" who seem perpetually angry and suspicious. Here was one exception. He had a cart full of cat food and other cat supplies ("They were buy-one-get-one-free at Safeway!") and was quite a character. I think he probably lives in one of the nearby residential hotels, which are pretty rough. They might allow cats just to keep the mice and rats at bay. Here's one of them... I really must post some nicer scenes of Klamath Falls!

Yes, please do that Diane! It would be nice to see the other side of the coin. Which reminds me I have an unfinished photo-essay on my own city......

I was surprised to see you say resident hotels -- plural. Many towns of that size have one, which probably never fills up, so more than one is cause for comment. Nice portrait of the man & his great smile.
