I'm an animal lover and this last year have been very interested in an organisation called: 'Hope for Paws'.
It's an animal rescue organisation, based in California, that was founded and is run by a man called Eldad Hagar.
Here are a few of the videos of the work they do. Some of these poor dogs have bought me to tears. But I do love the happy endings. And I certainly do admire the good heart of Eldad Hagar and his gentle ways with these animals.

Very moving Deyana, thank you. Something that needs all the attention it can possibly get. Have you explored this in your own area? I think that it would be very satisfying for many of us to be involved in doing what we can in our own backyard, whether it be actually rescuing animals, or volunteering at a shelter ( I used to but haven't in years) volunteer with a group of friends to go to a shelter just to take the dogs out for a walk on an evening 3 times a week. After Hurricane Katrina, there was a huge demand for volunteers as you can well imagine.

Both of those videos are very nice, but the added music is quite annoying.
Of course dogs and cats have it easy in a way, because they are our "chosen" animals and many of us always want to help them, in a way that we would never help rats, pigs or weasels among others. The world is not fair.

C'mon Kerouac, they are "chosen" because over the course of centuries cats and dogs have proven themselves to be ideal domestic pets. And, much of their neglect has to do with human failings and selfishness along with irresponsibility. All the pets we have ever had have been rescued. I would/could not ever conceive of buying a pedigree cat or dog. I'm all for animal rights but not inclined to adopt a rat or pig or a weasel. Not very practical, and, the rats, opossum, squirrels, and raccoons have a good life here in my very own backyard, probably better than most cats and dogs dining as they do in my garden. And, they are much more self sufficient than cats or dogs. You're being silly.

He's right about the schlocky music though. The stories had me in tears without the music, which was just a distraction. Music is fine, but it should complement the story, not take over from it.
Oh, attachment to a piglet can be much, much sadder for farm kids.

But it never seems to be enough and in reality it isn't. I wish I could do more. Maybe it's like anything, if we really want to do something we can, we just have to want it enough. I can just imagine the devastation after Hurricane Katrina. There must have been so many homeless animals as a result.

The world is not fair. I don't mind the music myself. If it helps to reach people in some way then it's all fine. I hate cruelty to all animals, whether they are domesticated or wild even. The thing with cats and dogs is, because they have been tamed by us - human beings - they cannot survive out in the wild by themselves, at least not properly or for very long. So in that way we hold a responsibility towards them. Then of course there is the raising and killing of certain animals for our consumption. That could make a thread of it's own.

No, it feels like it is never enough. But, the little amount of time people can give is better than nothing. Had I more money, I would most definitely adopt more animals. The cost of care really adds up between heart worm and flea treatments, annual vaccinations, food, medical costs etc. I wouldn't take on more than I could in all practicality adequately provide for.
When our 24 year old cat Rosalie disappeared we went to the local shelters. Well, I could only go to one and my husband went to the others because it was so very upsetting to see all these animals abandon, homeless and, each and everyone gave me a look that pleaded "please". And, that was just the cat section. Were I to have to visit the dog section I wouldn't be able to leave there without taking away at least one dog.
Yes, post-Katrina was utter chaos. The infrastructure and lack of preparation for animals was so inadequate. I do believe that a more efficient plan is in place. Paws crossed.
