Stairs are supposed to count for more than flat surfaces but that still doesn't work -- unless you live in a very high building.

just four floors. well i set it to the second to lowest sensibility setting now (at the very lowest, nothing got counted) and hope that is alright. according to it, i did 2.600 steps so far today (1.800 metres), which i suppose could be correct.

for the first time since getting that step counting app, i managed the magic 10.000 steps today. it is really quite a lot when you don't have time to walk often, just for the sake of walking (today i did, though - tuesdays is my office day, and i usually take the u-bahn and then the bus for three stops, so today i walked the bus-part ... but on most days i work from home, so other than shopping and picking up agnes at daycare, i have to create opportunities to walk, and find the time)

Having hurt my Achilles tendon 2 months ago my walking is very limited at present and physio says I must rest it. Bit of a pain in more ways than one. I thoroughly enjoy walking.

Mick, I hurt my achilles and my ankles were so stiff it was hard to walk even indoors. I couldn't wear my regular shoes and had to buy a pair of shoes that didn't touch the back of my ankles.
I discovered online that if you lightly pinch the back of your leg on both sides of the tendon that the ankle loosens up.
I probably didn't make myself clear and I can't now find the website.

It's getting better but oh so slow. Physio says the problem is that there is a poor blood supply to the Achilles.
It was my own fault for playing a ball game and forgetting that I was 67 and attempting to sprint to next base to avoid getting out. Hamstring also went and burst a blood vessel in the back of my leg.

That sounds rough. Is it the off season, though, so you have a few months to heal?

I remember my mother in-law, who had a sharp brain and lived to be 89, saying she felt her body had betrayed her. I couldn't relate then, but I do now. I strained a hamstring by just taking a brisk walk around the block. I had no idea warming up was required before walking!

I think the key is in the term "brisk walk" -- that is a sporting activity. I only take walks at normal speed, which for me means "slow". My father always said I had just two speeds: "slow" and "stop".

My father always said I had just two speeds: "slow" and "stop". Well, when the walk is taken on a half hour lunch break, and the walking partner is twenty years younger, the walk must be brisk. I sit in front of a computer all day in a windowless office, so it's always nice to get outside for a few minutes and, as Rikita mentioned, it's hard to get in those 10,000 steps. It took two weeks for that tiny little muscle tear to heal; annoying, but it certainly was nothing serious.

lately, i am often forced to walk very very slow, so i am happy when i can walk briskly (though my brisk walking would still be slow to others).

Actually, since I am tall, a lot of shorter people get along with my pace just fine.

This certainly is a popular thread. Has anyone mentioned the toothbrush? When you want to stop eating, brush your teeth.
Whenever I finish a meal I brush my teeth. I love to eat and usually eat till I'm full, but I feel the occasional urge to be sensible. By brushing my teeth, all temptation to eat more is gone. Finito. This is true even if I'm not full.
Brushing pushes some reset button, maybe by getting the taste of food out of my mouth. And because it's a nuisance to brush my teeth, I'm not usually tempted to eat between meals.

I am still enjoying my treadmill and have lost a bit of weight but what I am really happy with the most is that I am feeling stronger, have more energy and my balance is improving. I have been increasing the speed gradually and I think I am ready to begin using the incline feature. Also continuing to eat less.

as for me, recently for the first time the scales showed the weight that was my goal for the end of this year. of course, with the holidays coming up, it is not yet sure i really manage to finish the year at that weight, but i think i have a chance!

Thank you htmb and Rikita! Congratulations on reaching your goal Rikita! I agree, the holidays usually make us all gain a few pounds, more eating, less exercise. Since my husband is working right through the holiday season, I will have less opportunity to eat more and I will have more opportunity to get on my treadmill so maybe I will be lucky this year!
I found Breeze's comment interesting and will try this at home. When eating out, I am thinking I am going to buy some sugar free mints and maybe try to have one half way through a meal and see if it takes the urge to over indulgence away.

To all you weight-losers, keep up the good work!
At this time of year we all give in to temptation now and then. It's just not a good time to try to lose more weight. Simply maintaining the weight we have is a good goal.
I toast you with my glass of water!

was a kilo below my goal today - so even with that varying that is there depending what time of day i weigh myself, and with the holidays and the eating that is involved, i might really manage!

Always weigh yourself first thing in the morning, when you are at your lightest!

This is a discussion I hate as it is such an obsession in the media with endless "new diets". I did manage to lose some excess weight over the past year simply by portion control and riding my bicycle a lot, but I always fear the winter and the blah condition sedentary life creates (even if one avoids weight gain per se)... First damned snow; at least it was late.

I admit that I have thrown in the towel during the holidays - mostly because of too much personal stress, but also because I am in London, where I'm having a lot of trouble finding something decent to eat which doesn't also cost a fortune. The good thing is that I've been averaging 3 hour non-stop walks every day (I enjoy getting lost), plus swimming in the hotel pool. But in spite of that, I'm sure I've gained a little, because my pants are tighter. The main seasoning here is way too much salt - it's in everything and my tongue feels like dried-out leather!
Can't do much about the stress except deal with it when I get back to Paris, but plan to head for the nearest fresh fruit and vegetable stand as soon as I can and get back in the program.
Congratulations to all of you who stayed on track!

i usually take travel as "time off" as well, because i don't want to start getting out my scales and calculating or deny myself exotic treats while i am away ... and holidays like christmas and new years are exceptions too, anything else would be too frustrating. today was not a holiday though, and i just about managed to stick with the amount of calories i am "allowed", because my cousin showed up and brought a type of pastry that i love, but that is also very sweet and very rich ...
