There are at least 11 photos that I can see, Mich. wonderful pictures.
The newer graves seem so out of place. I suppose they'll weather in years to come, too.

Thank you htmb! I think I have now fixed my errors. We were quite surprised about the state of some of the areas in the Cemetery and wish we had booked the tour so we could ask the question as to why this is. The older sections were impeccably maintained with lush thick green manicured grass and there were sections where headstones were being cleaned and repaired yet there were so many areas that we thought must have contained even older grave sites but we were surprised that they were new burials sites. I hope to return one day to be able to take the tour.

Most interesting, Mich! The rich people certainly must have vied to have the tallest monument -- quite a contrast with the "regular people" part. Did you have a desire to go through and straighten the stones? Any idea what the tall tower is? It's very unexpected. Ditto the doors in that lower level -- crypts? It looks like a lovely, peaceful day. I love all the pictures, but particularly the 6th one down.

Bixa, it looks as though the tower is above the grave of Daniel O'Connell, an Irish politician in the 19th century who wanted freedom for Ireland.

I love seeing the different styles of cemeteries around the world, and these pictures are fantastic. However, they do not really promote the concept of unbolstered headstones as a way to keep the place tidy for hundreds of years. It looks like the earth (or perhaps just the restless dead) is trying to shrug off those annoying stones that have been stuck into the surface. That makes it almost surprising that the recent graves are still using the same style, even though it seems to be a given that they will lean and perhaps fall over after 50 or 100 years.

Bjd, I considered the possibility that the tower was there as a monument to O'Connell, but it's such a tall tower and even appears to have windows in it. That, coupled with its pointy hat, makes it look as though it could be much older -- perhaps before there was a graveyard there.

I think bjd is correct Bixa, it is a monument for Daniel O"Connell. It was a beautiful day, we actually only had one afternoon and one evening of rain on our whole holiday. We were prepared and warned to expect at least a bit rain most days.
Those are crypts, there were not many of them but they did circle the tower and grave site of Daniel O'Connell so we assumed they were prominent individuals from the uprising.
Kerouac I agree with that the grave stones seem to be being pushed out of the ground. The ground in Ireland is full of rocks that date back to the ice age and they pop up or are pushed up everywhere so I think that is why the grave yard looks like this. The place is massive and I think they just can not keep up with maintaining all of it.
