Wonderful story, Mossie! It's amazing to think that it took place well into the 20th century, since it sounds like something out of Hardy or L. P. Hartley.

yes, i think it is a smoked sausage ... and i wouldn't eat such a big one with it by myself, either, but share it with someone else ...

I like my veg raw. Kale, brussels sprouts and spinach are quite nice raw, and raw broccoli is lovely. I invariably nibble on the veg when I'm preparing dinner of an evening...you'd think that I'd be lovely and slim with all this healthy eating...but no.

I did try and warn you off that kale Cheery. It was fed to the cattle to ensure they kept a good round shape.

My beloved has been told that he's in danger of developing type II diabetes... his blood glucose is too high and has been edging upwards for a while. I heard him talking to the GP on the phone yesterday ' I walk at least 8K with the dog every day and I eat well...the wife cooks low fat all the time and I eat fruit!' When he put the phone down i said that whilst he used to walk miles with the dog, now he just ambled to the corner shop with him to buy his cigarettes...I do the long midday walk and Russell or I do the evening one....then I opened the drawer in his desk...full of sherbert lemons and chocolate limes...(fruit?) There's a biscuit tin full of chocolate digestive (I don't eat them) and a bag full of packets of crisps and snacks by his desk... He's just taken the dog out for his second walk...the sweets are in the bin and I'm about to go through the cupboard to dispose of the crunchy nut cornflakes, biscuits, crisps and other sugary nonsense that he nibbled on all day...a new man

How about chicken fat? The fat I skimmed off the stock I've just made looks lovely, but is it a cardiac killer?
As for kale, it is but one of the many members of the cabbage family; if people don't like it, there are at least hundreds of others.
I do like stammpot, the Dutch name for the dish rikita has shown. But my Dutch friends add olive oil, garlic and onions, sometimes Indonesian spices.
Though I must confess that one of them is a vegan, so non-meat smoked sausage. Stammpot is such a "national dish" there that there are also kosher, halal and vegetarian versions of the smoked sausage.

I do not feel vulnerable to type II diabetes because I am not attracted to sweets most of the time. I have occasional cravings which are sometimes ignored and which sometimes cause me to eat an entire bag of sweets in one sitting, but it is rare enough not to cause any worry. (I hope.)
As for fat, I absolutely love it but I don't seem to abuse it because every blood test shows that I have spectacularly perfect cholestorol levels which make my doctor (similar age to mine) completely jealous.
My only problem in the past has been uric acid levels (which cause gout), but now that I take a daily pill for such things, I can eat all of the seafood, mushrooms, spinach, cauliflower, asparagus that I want and... alcohol. Apparently, my consumption of all of these things is moderate, because I no longer have any problems. I very much prefer medication that neutralizes various problems rather than being told that I can no longer consume certain things ever.

Kerouac is describing many of my favourite foods. I'll have to keep that test and medication in mind, as I have another form of arthritis, though am doing very well these days, knock wood.
Bevvies, mostly wine, and some very dry cider. Almost never spirits, and I avoid beer as I have a bad reaction to it - certainly not the alcohol as beer usually contains less than wine, and I've never guzzled beer. One beer makes my face flush; it feels like an allergic reacion.
I still can't find anything reliable about poultry fat (except for the particular benefits of duck fat); the articles are so contradictory.

I don't fight blood analysis. My blood showed high levels of glucose and cholesterol. I put myself on a diet and went back to the gym. I walk faster now sleep better and have good blood results. I am on the pill however now and forever. I lost 10 Kgms. I don't walk the dog. My dog said that walk is good general health but will not help. I need to exercise more. Gym or run or cycle. No walking. Doc said something about wine that I didn't catch.
