Somehow you played the part of the perfidious Albion : you betrayed and left us. I still remember my class teacher, pale and quivering with grief and rage. "This is just too much to ask!" Her brother had been killed fighting for King and Empire, not in Australia, but in some European un-heard-of town. Now UK was going to join the Common Market, betray the preferred trading status of the countries still shown in pink on the Globe and leave us floundering trying to find new markets. Australia was so far from any commerce and what we produced as our main exports were wool and wheat, both sold in overseas markets with twitchy exchange rates. So now they are at it again. The agreements they sign are fleeting and the politicians are bastards in the bad sense of the word. If it were not for the good mob on here I would wish the whole lot to the bottom of the sea.

Indeed. I was in Oz early 70's and it came up many times.
Will you have us back?
I used to like Aussie steak.

I assume that in the meantime Australia and New Zealand have found markets much closer to home. Exporting to England would bring more pollution in the oceans with those ships using dirty fuel.
You'll just have to substitute chlorinated chicken for Aussie steak, Mick.

Ozzie Steak? what are yerz...millionaires? I made a stew from waving a bit of gravy beef over a pot last week. I added some cheap vegetables (the drought and fires have knocked out the horticulture) and a teaspoon of Vegemite to act as stock. UM...it was almost delicious. Beef is AUD 35 per kilo and lamb AUD 30. Kangaroo meat is also dear (not deer!) but makes a great mince for spag bol etc.
Fortunately Asia has the money to buy our real meat and when at last the rain comes, the animals restocking the paddocks will come with passports and accents.
Then we can have a barbie and you can eat in style.

The EU is Australia's second largest trading partner. It will be interesting to see what the breakdown is after Brexit since I would imagine (without anything to really base it on) that the British Isles buy a bit higher percentage of Australian goods than the continent.

Well questa, 30AUD is peanuts for the price of beef. It's only 18 euros. I had a look the other day and most nice beef was over 30€ per kilo. And that was at a supermarket, not a butcher's.

Man, the AUD has tanked. It was *more* than the USD for a while not long ago. Beef is *massively* cheaper here in the US, very good quality too. I don't buy much meat in Italy but for 30€/kg you are waaay up into the luxury meats. In general, I wouldn't say there is a huge difference between the cost of food between Italy and the US.

Those growth hormones make US beef freakishly tender since the poor animals grow so fast. Next year, the British might get a taste of it if it doesn't turn into jelly crossing the ocean.

The fight against it continues . I know I am probably burying my head in the sand and am suffering from Brexiety but it is not yet a done deal. Anyway re beef I will be ok whatever we have some of the best beef in the world here locally (Herefordshire cattle)and I only eat it very occasionally.

I buy British meat and poultry, we have several farm shops around here where you can see the animals are well treated (apart from the killing bit...and that's supposedly carefully regulated). I'd rather have a small amount of excellent quality local product, than a shedload of cheap stuff from abroad. We don't tend to eat much in the way of processed products...that seems to be where lot of the imported eggs and meat are used.

We are wondering whether our son's GF will still be able to come over here as often as she likes from Finland. Ideally he would move there when they get married, but his Finnish isnt brilliant, he might struggle to find work there.
It is a bit of a pipe dream anyway, his crohns treatment would cost him too much over there unless he had a good job...and his crohns is too debilitating atm for him to work anyway. If he is cured, or at least becomes well enough to work then he could apply for Finnish citizenship eventually...and once he'd been there a few years he would get subsidised medical treatment like a native.
When they started seeing each other Sofia loved England...now, not so much.

Cheery, does she love it less now just because the first flush of a new place has worn off, or is it because of the current political climate in England? I think that Sofia had quite a romantic idea of what England is like when she first came over, but now that she's been here lots I think that the gloss has worn off! Everything is expensive, shopkeepers are surly, unemployment high, total strangers TALK to you for no reason...(she's Finnish...personal space and avoiding unnecessary chat, or even eye contact is important), she can't get a decent cup of coffee....cuts in local services means that the streets are dirty, there's litter everywhere....etc etc She still likes it here, but doesnt see a future for the two of them here. Brexit has just made everything worse.
