Here is an edifying series of front page articles from the Times-Picayune of New Orleans.

That looks absolutely terrible, have to feel sorry for those affected.

I have several friends and acquaintances who live around the flooded area. Gratefully the majority of them were spared. There have been others though, family of friends here who have come to NOLA to seek shelter.
In the meantime there have been many benefits and events put on by various groups and organizations to help raise money for the folks there in return for all the generosity that the good people of that area provided NOLA victims of Katrina.
Some of the money that was raised during the benefit for my husband we chose to donate to 2 animal rescue groups in that area and we were sure to let the people who made donations be aware of our decision lest someone object, which no one did.
This unprecedented event could very easily have sat over NOLA rather than stalling out over the area in and around Baton Rouge.
