So he gets impeached. What next?

Since the Senate is in the hands of the Republicans, nothing will happen because they won't vote to remove him from office. The impeachment is a sort of trial.

Well, not exactly. I guess I would say that if an official is impeached, it is analogous to his being indicted. An impeached official is not removed from office. Only after he (or she) is impeached is there a trial. In the US, if the president is impeached, that trial is carried out by the Senate. As Bjd points out, the Senate presently is controlled by the infinitely disgusting Republicans, the party of Trump.
Politically speaking, and specific to the US, the pertinent definition is: a charge of misconduct made against the holder of a public office.

Though the Senate does hear - and manage - the trial of an impeached president, the trial is presided over by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, John Roberts, a GW Bush appointee who has shown flashes of integrity.
If the revelations from the House investigations and public hearings get the public angry enough to put pressure on their Senators, Trump could actually be removed from office. If not by the trial, in the 2020 election. Which would actually be the best option because we’d get rid of Pence too and have a whole new administration.

But surely the chief justice does not get the final word on his own? If a majority of the Republicans vote that Trump should not be removed from office, then that is what would count, isn't it?
On Tuesday the friend I met up with in Biarritz had just returned from a trip to the States. They drove south from Washington through North Carolina (the outer banks?) and up the Shenandoah Scenic Route. She said the people were very friendly but all seemed to be Trump voters.
True believers, no matter which religion or persuasion, never change their minds.

The Chief Justice is the Judge, who conducts the trial. The Senate is the Jury. Two thirds “of those present” (not 2/3 of 100 members, but who would miss THAT vote?) must vote to convict and remove. That would require all Democrats and 20 Republicans to convict him. Highly unlikely.
But during the process, American voters may hear enough to decide to vote against him next November.

Mossie, Trump’s been broke multiple times and has been bailed out by Russian oligarchs/money-launderers.
Trump is now bankrupting America, not only financially, but more seriously, morally and diplomacy-wise.
His clear sailing may be about to end. I hope.

We have a run-off election today for Governor here in Louisiana. It is a very, very tight race and too close to call.
Trump has made about a half dozen visits to the state over the last month or so in support of the Republican candidate in an effort to not have a repeat of what happened in Tennessee back in October where the incumbent Republican lost to a Democrat.
New Orleans is a BLUE Parish (county) but, the rest of the state is Red. Still, the incumbent, a Democrat garnered enough votes in the state to merit a run-off.
It will be an interesting day/night to say the least.

Third party candidates end up hurting the next best candidate.

Yes, I just saw the Democrat candidate won Louisiana and thought of Casi's post here.
Maybe Trump's use of stimulants would explain his slurred words and other incoherences. Or maybe he's just stupid and can't talk right.
I wrote the above before checking the link Patrick posted.

Is Twitter covered by libel laws? I thought they applied to newspapers and "official" publications.

I wonder why they keep leaving out Mark Rutte (PM of the Netherlands) and Princess Anne out of the group. And where was the microphone? And who cares? Why is this being made into a great big story?

The big story should be about Trump leaving early because his feelings are hurt. Seems his wisdom doesn't go far enough to go above such petty facts. But with Trump nothing is big story anymore it is just routine.

Trump is notoriously thin-skinned. He really can't stand not being the object of admiration. Unfortunately for him, outside his voters and a few idiots abroad, there is not much admiration anywhere.

I was absolutely "floored" when it was announced that Alan Dershowitz (a self proclaimed Liberal Democrat) joined Trump's legal team in the upcoming impeachment trial.
Strategic? Desperate? Clever?
(edited to add that I just heard on NPR a quote from 1999 that Trump made referring to Dershowitz as a "lunatic")

That Dershowitz is considered a "liberal" makes me run screaming away from being identified with that label. He's a war mongering, torture supporting, authoritarian, as well as reportedly being one of Epstein's pedophile clients. If Dersh is a liberal, I want nothing to do with liberals.
