so, last year i tried to grow some radishes and carrots in our back yard. however, the back yard is surrounded by houses and there are tall trees there, too ... so the place we chose turned out to not get any direct sunlight at all, and our plants did not grow (except for some water cress), and then there was some strong rain that flattened what little was there ...
this year is my second attempt - i bought a raised bed to plant things in, so they are a bit more protected from people walking there, and will try to find a spot that gets maybe at least an hour of sun ... have to put it up soon. bought water cress and nasturtium seeds so far - what else (that is edible) could i put there? (we have forest strawberries and currants at another spot already). i read that pie plant, mangold, spinach, and some herbs do alright with little sun. what are your experiences? i don't want to have a huge harvest, just enough so agnes can eat something we grew ourselves ...

Oh, that is a good link!
Rikita, what about pansies and violets? The flowers can be eaten and they'd add some cheery color to the garden. You might want to try calendula, too, although I suspect that one wants more sun.

water cress is growing well, as expected, and the spinach looks good too, the other ones are not doing anything, i might give it a few more days and then just put spinach on the empty areas, too ...

well, in the end the spinach had some leafs but not that many, i added it to a soup ... the water cress was fine, and the nasturtium looks okay, though no flowers yet ... the other plants did not grow at all. in the end, that courtyard is just too dark (and the one spot that gets a bit more light is already occupied by the strawberries of someone else - he keeps telling me a. can eat from them, but the one time we looked, we only found one ...

Hostas do like shade. Sum and Substance, the big one, spent several years in a pot till I could find a place in the garden with enough shade. The pot had to come indoors in the winter but that's due to our crumby climate. Mick, would a potted hosta survive through one of your winters?

our spot last year was too shady, i think. the guy that told me this was a good spot claimed the sun gets there occasionally, but at no time i looked, there was sun there, ever. there are other spots that seem better, but he has his own plants there. still, have to speak to him soon, to ask him for a different spot ...
