The Muslim Institute of the Grand Mosque of Paris has just published a 25 point proclamation concerning Islam in France to give spiritual guidance to Muslims living in France. The preamble say that with the approach of the presidential election, the economic crisis has exacerbated the rejection by a certain number of the French, who look upon the Muslim religion unfavourably in the wake of the wave of violence that swept the country. Daech, which the Grand Mosque authorities reject totally, propagated a cataclysmic vision of Islam in the world.
Anyway, the text goes on to say that it wishes to define Islam in France as a modern, tolerant, benevolent and secular religion, such as is practiced by the overwhelming majority of French Muslims. Fundamentalist Islam is considered to be an erroneous interpretation of the Koran and leads to obscurantism, ignorant pedantry, misogyny, sectarianism and a refusal of republican values.
Some of the main points are:
1. France is not a land of Islam. It is a land where many religions coexist, including Islam, but also atheists and agnostics. Every Muslim should respect the values and the laws of the French republic.
2. Muslims should not seek religious culture from preachers, online prophets or other deviant sources.
3. It is explicitly forbidden for any Muslim to engage in war, because the jihad is only permitted in the case of legitimate self defense against an aggressor (Coran 2.190). If the adversary seeks peace, Muslims must also seek peace. Criminals who promote the jihad are impious usurpers because Islam is a religious of peace.
4. No Muslim has the right to demand that France change its values. For example, since blasphemy and religious caricature are authorised by French law, it is normal to say that one is hurt or offended by such things, but no one should demand that such things be banned or react violently. On a broader scale, no Muslim has the right to demand that laws be modified to correspond to his own faith, just as no Christian, no Jew, no agnostic and no atheist has this right.
5. All forms of anti-Semitism are contrary to the teachings of the Prophet.
(There are 25 points in all.)
Anyway, it also goes on to say that there is no obligation for Muslim women to wear a veil because the only rule is that both men and women of the Muslim faith should dress decently. Equality between men and women is a must. Corporal punishment and polygamy are forbidden.
The French "Islam of enlightenment" also says that all of the latest scientific theories, such as the Big Bang or the theory of evolution are completely compatible with Islam.

I think this sounds pretty good, and it would be nice if the Muslim authorities of more countries came out with statements such as these in an official context rather than just an isolated “good Muslim” being interviewed on television and saying soothing statements to non-Muslims.
