Joy with icing on top ~ season nine of The Great British Bake Off has begun!
I am watching The Sinner. It's a little slow, but compelling. You just have to find out why. I'm on season one. I believe season two starts a different story.

Bixa, are there more hours in the Oaxaca day than in Montana? I can’t believe how many TV series you watch and books you read and trips you take and threads you post and curate.

I watch a maximum of three tv shows in a day, take a max of two trips per year, generally only read when I go to bed, and am behind on thread-making. But thank you for making it sound as though I have a cape and tights!

Bixa, the photo I chose was actually a still from an episode of "Acorn Antiques", a skit on terrible daytime soap operas (and one in particular that was a byword for bad acting and wobbly sets) by the wonderful Victoria Wood, that ran for a while on one of her series. I can't find that episode on line (apparently the other actors had a terrible time trying to keep a straight face when Julie Walters appeared in the baggy tights), but there are a few: Victoria Wood used leotards a couple of times: My blog | My photos | My video clips | My Librivox recordings"too literate to be spam"

I very much like the series Alex Hugo. Even though it is the standard police/crime series, it concerns an alpine police investigator, so all of the stories take place in the mountains, on trails or in the snow a lot of the time. It is so much more refreshing than all of the cop shows in big cities.

I’ve heard good things about VICTORIA, the PBS Masterpiece series. Just picked it up at the library, and will let you know how we like it. Masterpiece productions are usually fabulous. www.imdb.com/title/tt5137338/Update: We liked it very much, despite there being a flaw on disk two that prevented us from watching the chapter in which V goes from dismissing A to adoring him. We also had a deja vu sensation from having watched The Crown a few weeks earlier. One note: though costumes and set were painstakingly accurate, the dialog seemed less courtly and more modern than I would have expected for the era.

Although I have some quibbles (less brooding, Albert!), overall I like Victoria a bunch. Good cast and fairly true to history.

Oh, this new version is definitely sexier (nastier?) than the original. I notice that it has a -12 rating in the corner of the screen instead of the usual -10 for shows at this time of the evening.

I could have sworn that I'd reported on Ozark here, but apparently not. It recently had the finale of its season two and I don't know why I resisted it so long as I am a fan of both Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. Anyway, a picky friend recommended it, so I gave it a try. After watching the pilot, it was all I could do not to binge through a whole season. (I've watched three episodes total over the past five days, thank you very much)
Bateman also directed the first two episodes, which are both impressive as hell. Really super casting throughout, also. I guess the reason I wasn't initially drawn to it is the because the plot doesn't seem terribly original: man in trouble with gangsters has to move whole family to a rural area. Yawn, right? You couldn't be more wrong.

Has anyone been watching THE GOOD PLACE?
It seems to be an interesting setup but SPOILER ALERT-don’t read more if you want the plot to reveal itself.
4 young people find themselves dead and presumably gone to heaven, but gradually realize that they are being subtly tortured by personalized design and must be in The Bad Place.
They try to get out but keep failing and getting rebooted by the master of the bad place, played by Ted Danson. Each reboot is a Groundhog Day-like rerun of the same events with minor twists. There’s also a Janet, an Android who looks normal but is excessively upbeat and knows-it-all. She serves as a kind of Mr. Spock on their expedition.
I only saw parts of two episodes, as it came on after the news. I think maybe they are doing a marathon of last season re-runs as they gin up excitement for next week’s Season Premiere. If I hear that it’s good, though, I might borrow it from the library.

I adore The Good Place & reported it on it a while back, but don't remember where.
It's probably better when one sees it without having the plot given away first, as you just did.

Rainy week in Wisconsin. Glad we brought season 8 of Curb Your Enthusiasm with/by Larry David to keep us from going stir-crazy.
I still have mixed feelings about the general misanthropic nature and cringeworthy behavior of the characters, but Mr. Kimby really relates to the curmudgeonly lead character, and I hear him laughing and chuckling more than normal, so that’s a good thing.

Just finished watching the final episode of Vanity Fair. I'm embarrassed to admit that I never read the book, which would have helped somewhat as there are a few time jumps to move the tv show along. Still, it was a really satisfying and entertaining series with a great cast. The main character makes Scarlett O'Hara look warm and cuddly, & she's played to perfection by Olivia Cooke. www.radiotimes.com/news/tv/2018-10-12/vanity-fair-cast-itv-amazon/

I have just watched this as well. Her 'team' is a delightfully interesting mixture and I think the Doctor is going to be fun. BTW all the incarnations of this character have been simply called "The Doctor". The "Who" is only in the title.

The Kimbys have been watching Woman in White, a mystery/drama in 5 parts on PBS. It’s based on a novel written by Wilkie Collins in 1859, and has all the elements we love in our British Isles dramas: orphaned sisters, one betrothed to an evil nobleman, a mysterious insane asylum escapee, fantastic costuming (dressing for dinner when they are already dressed up by today’s standards), palatial homes... Between Downton Abbey, Wolf Hall, The Crown, Victoria and now this, my royalty itch is being seriously scratched lately! In the link below, don’t read the Plot, unless you like spoilers... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Woman_in_White_(novel)

Quoting from Small Sreen Viewing: The Woman in White is one of my all time favorites. Having read the novel some 30plus years ago and then a PBS version made sometime in the 90's, it transformed itself magnificently into film. (I too, have a penchant for the British dramas. All the ones you mentioned and then some).
