Staying in a resort that has Netflix and Amazon TV, so at Mr. Kimby’s insistence, we watched “Lorena”, the true story of the battered young wife who flipped out and cut off her husband’s penis. All four episodes.
I felt that the outrage over a man losing his “manhood” was overwrought and highly male-centric. (Women’s breasts are cut off way more often - where’s the outrage there?) The actual abuse John Bobbitt inflicted on his much smaller wife, Lorena, was hardly addressed till the last episode.
And, since she admitted to her knifework, the justice system required that she be found “not guilty by reason of insanity” to avoid being convicted of malicious wounding and being sent to prison for 20 years. She “only” got sentenced to 45 days in the state mental hospital instead.
Her husband was not convicted for the many instances of sexual abuse he forced her to endure in the 4 years they were married. Instead, he became a minor celebrity and porn star(!) after the microsurgery that re-attached his organ.
I could have lived without seeing this series, But Mr. Kimby enjoyed it.

I adore that show. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a brilliant writer & actress. Cheery, do you watch Killing Eve? It's also one of her babies -- very different stuff. I'm hopelessly addicted to Doc Martin. Binging has led to the last episode of season five. I think about Martin & "Louiser" even when I'm not watching.

Mr. Kimby failed to engage with The Good Place, partway through season one. Too bad. I like it, though it’s kind of silly. We’re going back to some old favorites: Friday Night Lights (about Texas high school football fanatics - yeah, I was skeptical, too), and Season 4 of The Affair, which may have run its course in season 3...

I was channel surfing looking for live coverage of the Algerian events. Nothing on Canal Algérie, of course, nor the Moroccan channels which fear contamination, although I was amused that one of them was covering the Pope's visit to Morocco. God, all of these channels now... Russia, Serbia, Armenia, Vietnam, Korea, Turkey, Dubai, it just never stops. But I settled on one of the African channels and was mesmerized by a soap opera called "The Polygamic Home" and you would not believe the kinds of things that happen there. Starring Ebenezer Kepombia.... Directed by Ebenezer Kepombia, produced by Ebenezer Kepombia, written by Ebenezer Kepombia, edited by Ebenizer Kebombia, photography by Ebenezer Kepombia... His name appeared in the credits at least 15 times. Once the ladies had driven the men out of the house by beating them with a broom, it ended and then another totally different series started. Starring Ebenezer Kepombia... I could really get hooked on this stuff, so I had to change the channel very quickly. Just take a look at the endless opening credits and you want to find out what all of these people are up to immediately.

Even though Skins is a really old series now, I am appreciating it for the second time as I work my way through all seven seasons on DVD (the extras are excellent and by DVD is the only way to see them). It's funny that I like milquetoast series like Death in Paradise, but I also need to get my fix of the extreme stuff like Rake or Skins. It was also the greenhouse for current stars like Nicholas Hoult or Dev Patel.

it's a while ago now that i watched skins, so don't remember for sure, but i think i had mixed feelings. i enjoyed it a lot, but sometimes it also got a bit much. and i always had a hard time getting adjusted to a completely new group of people, missed the old ones for about half a season ...

I'll be watching the New Zealand series The Brokenwood Mysteries again tonight. Oddly enough, France is the only country besides New Zealand airing it on a major network, although it appears on a few fringe channels in various countries.

One thing that really amuses me in Brokenwood is that there is a character called Kahu who seems to be some sort of plumber or something along those lines. He just happens to be in contact with every single case (Brokenwood must be a really tiny place in spite of all of its murders). He is always interrogated as though he might be a potential suspect, but he is never involved in the crime. Anyway, what's funny is that he is an extremely handsome Maori who seems to be allergic to wearing any shirts with sleeves even when everybody else is wearing rather heavy jackets. I figure that either the main investigating woman is going to fall in love with him or else he is going to be the culprit in the ultimate crime of the series. assemble.me/uploads/websites/321/images/59f65ab09fa38.jpg

I just watched the first episode of Black Mirror, and I don't know what to think. In the first episode, a princess has been kidnapped, and the demand of the kidnapper is for the prime minister to fuck a pig on a live television broadcast shown on every channel in Britain. Contrary to many series where the evil plot is thwarted at the last minute, the prime minister fucks the pig.
I still need to digest this episode before I watch the next one.

Meanwhile, I finally finished watching all seven seasons of Skins again. It was really interesting to see which details I had completely forgotten and which ones were engraved in my mind permanently. And I also found it interesting to see which characters I hated and changed my opinion about, and which ones I didn't like right through to the end.
For people unfamiliar with Skins, it consists of 3 totally different series of 3 different groups of characters. They are all students at the same school, and a number of them are out of control. About 85% of their parents are useless, along with 100% of the teachers. School issues play an extremely small part of their lives because they are obsessed with sex, alcohol and drugs. For me, it was a totally alternate universe, but it is quite possible that some young people really live like this. Frankly, I never knew anyone who had beer or vodka for breakfast, but I did know a few people who had a spliff before the first class of the day.
As for series 7, it probably should never have existed. It consists of 3 separate stories using 3 characters from previous seasons and showing how their adult lives are evolving. While the three stories are basically interesting, they have nothing to do with Skins. They are just showcases for three of the most popular actors.

Watched the first episode of the Netflix nature documentary Our Planet yesterday..must say it was rather good. David Attenborough lends a certain gravitas...and the cinematography (and subject) is breathtaking.

Okay, I finished the first season of Black Mirror, which was quite impressive but I felt that it lacked humanity. However, the best one was 15 Million Merits starring Daniel Kaluuya and Rupert Everett. I actually started watching Black Mirror without the slightest idea of what it was about. I just knew that it was highly regarded. It is in fact a sort of Twlight Zone for mature audiences. Each tale is an independent science fiction story, just far enough in the future to make us feel uncomfortable.
The first story of series two with Domhnall Gleeson blew me away, though. Be Right Back tells the story of a young woman who loses her partner in a car accident. A well-meaning person tells her of a web service that allows you to communicate with the dead person. It consolidates everything that the deceased person ever posted on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or anything else so that it can imitate the responses that the dead person would say. If you feel in confidence, you can then authorise it to use all of your private messages, etc. What happens next is heartbreaking.

i think i watched the first season of black mirror ages ago, i think i mainly liked it ...
right now, finished the second season of star trek discovery, about which i liked some things, others not, but it is fun enough to watch. watching the last season of game of thrones, and happy to watch it just because it is game of thrones, and watching jane the virgin, currently at the 4th season, must say the novelty from the first season has worn off quite a bit, though ...

One of our archive channels has started re-running the Van Der Valk series from the 70s. It was a favourite for my parents, but even then I thought something about it didn't quite work, partly because the key actors didn't match to my idea of the characters from the books, but mainly because too many them are too visibly acting rather than inhabiting the characters. But it's quite interesting to see the location shots of central Amsterdam choked with cars (and everyone choking each other with incessant smoking). I really appreciate all the input on this thread, BTW. Bodyguard is a tense thriller whose twists and turns had lots of people hooked. Perhaps not entirely plausible, shall we say, but if you like a"Who's the baddie really" nailbiter, it should fit the bill. And Keeley Hawes is always worth watching.

Just finished watching the final season - without Kevin Spacey - of House of Cards. We found it really hard to follow, and less engaging than previous seasons.
I checked the IMDB viewer ratings for each episode in every season. Before this season, the lowest rated episode got 7.8 out of 10. This season, the highest rated episode got 4.7 out of 10 and the finale got only 2.7. At least there were only 8 episodes instead of the usual 13...

I have been rediscovering Capitaine Marleau. Like most of France, I missed a lot of the early series, but they are showing them again now with three times more viewers than the first time, coming in #1 for the evening, which is unheard of for "reruns." Corinne Maseiro is one of the most fantastic actresses in France, a great hulk of ugly police detective which makes her all the more appealing in her hideous chapka.

We’ve begun watching Season Two of The Deuce, starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal. It’s set in the 70’s in Manhattan and follows hookers & pimps, peepshow operators and porn movie producers during a time when the city of New York decided to not enforce laws against the world’s oldest profession, IF they took it off the streets and into massage parlors. The title is from a slang nickname for 42nd Street, where all the action was. Sounds bad, but it’s actually pretty good. Trivia: they hired an “intimacy counselor” to make sure all the actors/actresses who had to get naked and get physical on set felt safe and comfortable. Something that’s been done for child actors, but this is something new.
