So I spend 3 days in Romania... not a lot. For work, so I didn't see much, but at least I saw something else than our habitual plant located in an area that was already a punition by the time of Ceaucescu.
Let us start by the ugly. the suburbs of Cluj, something similar to Aubervilliers. Well maybe worse. You'll see that I am not a fast learner, the pics are still small...
The street in front of my hotel.
The view from my hotel room. Fortunately there was no rope to hang myself...
A strange spelling deriving from 'coiffeur' in French and Friseur probably (at a time when we would 'frise' the moustaches I'd venture to say...
The architect had no imagination and several blocks are the same.
I told you... there is a casino there.
A chruch. Strangely no rows ofd seats, just seats on the walls.

Now the center of Cluj. Cluj was a Austro-Hungarian city at the time of the empire. The center has retained some of the grandeur of then.
Actually the city is probably the richest of Romania, with nearly no unemployment.
Wonder who this guy is who blocks the view of a pub/restaurant on the central market place.
There were kids singing religious songs.
The church with a nice - soviet-like era monument.
The opera.
Another church, opened at night.
Inside the church.
I found it strange here : you put candles through some liquid into sand. I guess it limits the time it burns.

Since I was there to work, here the view from the building I was visiting... The whole place was a gigantic plant that fell apart after the revolution. Some buildings are being renovated, the others are pillages... 'they' even stole the plates covering the sewers, leaving big potholes where you could leave the wheel of your car. Next time I'll take a pic of the road, it was ... interesting.

Well, I for one are delighted that you had a little time for tourism on top of work. I'm certain that Romania has some beautiful things to see, but perhaps not so many in Cluj. So we must thank you again for going there to help the economy to develop. In 60 or 70 years when Cluj has become the tourist hotspot of Europe, you will be able to tell everybody that you contributed to it.

Great to see a report on someplace little reported on here. How do you pronounce "Cluj"? Is your company tasked with renovating &/or re-purposing that entire complex or just part of it? Looks like you didn't get there a moment too soon! I'm fascinated by those churches, which look more like what I associate with Greek Orthodox churches rather than Roman Catholic, which I think is the predominant religion in Romania. They're really beautiful. The view from my hotel room. Fortunately there was no rope to hang myself... the pics are still small... I've made that same mistake with Postimage. Here is what Mark says: ... leave this selection on 'Hotlink for forum' ... (full tutorial here)

Thanks bjd - I did that to get a better look. Pity about all the ads that come swimming in and clutter the page.
Very interesting Whatagain - Romania is almost non-existent to me so I thank you for the introduction! Yes, it would be nice if you sent the photos through at a bigger size but I'm sure someone will show you how to do it.
