Riana was better when she was more magic and less atmospherics. She came up with the spooky shtick and silence but now it has lost much of the act to the special effects people and clutter.

Introduced Jeff to The Detectorists this week. He loved it excellent.

Oh, YAY! Jeff is a man of keen good taste, as evidence his taste in wives. Do you like the show, too, Cheery?

I do. In fact it reminds me of my teenage years when I used to trail around after local amateur archaeologists in Bedfordshire. I got to empty wheelbarrows full if mud onto heaps and wash fragments of pottery with a toothbrush...but I did go field walking a few times...that was interesting. Picked up a few bits of clay pipe and a farthing

Oh, coming across those things in a field must have been fairly exciting -- a window to the past.

I had seen Steve McQueen's Shame at the cinema when it was first released, but it didn't make as much of an impression on me as the reviews said it deserved. But I watched it today and was definitely more impressed than the first time. Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan definitely gave it their all in terms of flesh, but also in the intensity of their performances. Obviously, such a movie is not for everybody.
Obviously, the trailer can show absolutely nothing.

I'm not usually a Doctor Who fan but that was very good.

I will have to try Doctor Who again. I was not at all interested in the last doctor so I didn't watch it.

I watched Picnic (1955) tonight. William Holden, Kim Novak, Cliff Robertson. Those movies are so over the top. No wonder our parents were a bit weird.

I finished watching Wolf Hall and don't know why it took me so long to throw myself at it. Mark Rylance is astounding, but all of the acting is excellent. I know my Tudor history fairly well, but the brain does scramble while watching this mini-series. And I didn't want to look anything up because it would give away the plot!

My grandkids are growing up with a steady consumption of Disney and other animated feature movies. I can't remember if they have seen a human actor. Even their TV shows are cartoon characters. What happens to the Oscars? People will not relate to real actors and the awards will go to the computers.

The Kimbys have been watching Woman in White, a mystery/drama in 5 parts on PBS. It’s based on a novel written by Wilkie Collins in 1859, and has all the elements we love in our British Isles dramas: orphaned sisters, one betrothed to an evil nobleman, a mysterious insane asylum escapee, fantastic costuming (dressing for dinner when they are already dressed up by today’s standards), palatial homes... Between Downton Abbey, Wolf Hall, The Crown, Victoria and now this, my royalty itch is being seriously scratched lately! In the link below, don’t read the Plot, unless you like spoilers... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Woman_in_White_(novel)

Thanks for the heads up re WOLF HALL Bixa. I've been eying it for sometime now.
Kimby, The Woman in White is one of my all time favorites. Having read the novel some 30plus years ago and then a PBS version made sometime in the 90's, it transformed itself magnificently into film.
(I too, have a penchant for the British dramas. All the ones you mentioned and then some).

Kimby, I would have to go back and review the British series (mostly crime dramas) that I binged through over the years. Of course there is Prime Suspect with Helen Mirren and then a recent re-make with another female lead detective who doesn't come close to Mirren's performance but does an admirable job. I will go back and take a gander at the others.
I loved Broadchurch, The Fall and some others.
And then, Peaky Blinders which was mentioned on here as I recall Lugg being a huge fan as well.
There is one other whose name escapes me that stars Charlotte Rampling that I was enthralled with, being a huge Rampling fan.
Curious Mick, about your wife's choice of American dramas. I cannot think of too many that hold a candle to those of the Brits.

Casi, I am copying this discussion to the “What TV series have you watched?” Thread, so it’ll all be in one place when I’m standing before the vast selection of DVDs at our library, wondering what to check out. Thanks a bunch.

Yes Casi - I remain a fan of Peaky Blinders - looking forward to the next series. Got to catch up with the new Dr Who Cheery so looking forward to it. Also Black earth arising - thanks Mick for that prompt.
I have just finished watching " Killing Eve" and really enjoyed it - I think some of you would enjoy it too . Here is a taster . I really had no idea that BBC America existed .
Also just started watching " The First " not sure yet if this will be good or not so good or really bad .

Lugg, I am currently watching Killing Eve and totally into it. Watched episode seven last night. I finally understand what critics mean when they say that something is "stylish" in a positive way. Hard to describe, but Killing Eve seems to merit that accolade. It's written and produced by the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who wrote and also starred in the amazing "Fleabag".
Never heard of The First, but having watched the trailer I know I need to give it a chance.

OK, It is not new, and it is not crime drama but espionage, but I would crawl over broken glass to have the complete set of "Callan". Starred Edward Woodward, Russell Hunter as his odiferous assistant 'Lonely', and filmed in rather scratchy B & W. Very much a product of the Cold War and the nasty minds of MI6 and KGB. Anthony Valentine also in it as a smarmy colleague trying to take Callan's place as head operator.

I just knew you would like Killing Eve Bixa . Yes Questa I have not seen Callan for years but remember how much I enjoyed it too. I suspect you would also enjoy Killing Eve- which focuses on the "new" Cold War .

Fantastic Beasts was on TV tonight, so I watched it even though I had seen it at the cinema. There is so much detail in these movies that they really do need to be seen at least twice. But it's probably going to send me back to see Grindelwald again.

At the weekend we watched a documentary 'John and Yoko ' on channel 4. It was fascinating. I remember resenting Yoko tremendously when the Beatles split up...in fact I didn't like her at all because she 'stole' our John Lennon. I was very young at the time tho. I realise now how much she meant to him and how much she contributed to his creativity...she might be strange but I like her much more now.

I think that just about all of us felt that way about Yoko, and we were all unfair, perhaps even a bit xenophobic. Would we have felt that same thing if she had been British or even European?
