I am crushed that it won't be Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Actually, double-crushed, as I see she just opened in a play in London. No Phoebe for me.

Well the new Doctor is a woman, the excellent Jodie Whittaker.....the internet is full of people moaning about it...Good grief. I'm surprised but pleased...we always have to wait and see how the new Doctor settles in...

We watched Handmaiden (not to be confused with The Handmaid's Tale). Set in Korea, this unrated period film combines elements of Downton Abbey with Behind the Green Door (the porn classic) and features a con game that keeps getting better in each of three chapters. Loved it.

The photos of Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor make me think she's a perfect choice. I've admired her acting in everything I've seen her in.

Tonight I was thrilled to see the Arte was showing Jacques Audiard's first movie See How They Fall (Regarde les hommes tomber). In spite of his fantastic later features such as Read My Lips, A Prophet, Rust and Bone, A Self Made Hero, The Beat that My Heart Skipped, Dheepan, etc., for some reason this one has always remained my favourite; even though it can be considered to be a somewhat disjointed first effort in comparison to the perfect structure of his later films. For one thing, this movie stars the legendary Jean Yanne, but also Jean Trintignant in perhaps the most sleazy role he ever did, as a drifter, part scam artist, part gambler. Most important, it was the breakthrough role of Mathieu Kassovitz who is absolutely incredible as an affectionate dimwit. There are shades of both A Prophet and The Beat that My Heart Skipped contained in the movie. Anybody who has never seen this movie should do so urgently.
Actually, here is the entire movie on YouTube:

Tonight one of the channels was showing Donnie Darko, so there was no way that I could possibly watch anything else.
I have never understood people who don't like the movie on the basis of "I didn't understand it." What should that have to do with anything?

That's not my reason. My reason is that I just plain don't like it.
I think there are far more people who do like it than that don't, though. I don't like flavored yogurt, either.

Has anyone else seen Toni Erdmann? We borrowed it from the library as this kind of film almost never screens in our community. A strange, funny, touching look at a career-driven young woman and her (shall we say eccentric) father who is trying to make sure she's happy in her life. One of the most unusual movies we've seen, and liked. A 2016 German film, and there's already an American remake in the works with Kristen Wiig and Jack Nicholson. Hard to imagine that one could approach the German original. (Plus the US version will get all fig-leafy about the nudity.) m.imdb.com/title/tt4048272/?ref=m_nv_sr_2

Probably not so much in America, since our "culture" is so pop-oriented, and we are too lazy to watch films with subtitles. Sad.

Yesterday I watched the last episode of the second (& last, I believe) season of Top of the Lake.
Surely someone must have reviewed the series on here, but I only found out about it recently and was compelled to watch because it starred Elisabeth Moss. She again stunned with her economical and completely convincing acting.
I'm way more ambivalent about Jane Campion and whatever the hell it is she's up to. In the first season, she has Holly Hunter unconvincingly placed as the guru of a bunch of women "finding themselves" in the middle of nowhere in New Zealand. I understand that Holly Hunter has somewhat of a cult status, but everything about her drives me up the wall. The best thing about The Piano (besides Harvey Keitel, of course) was that HH was mute in it. But Top of the Lake's plot, with a missing child and a mystery, keeps the viewer riveted to the first series.
The second series takes Moss's character to Sydney, where she is picking up the pieces of her life four years later. Again there is a mystery and a problem child, so of course I kept watching.
What really bothers me and kept me from immersing myself completely in the show is Campion's depiction of human beings. Really, Jane -- all women are shallow and hysteria-prone and all men are pigs? The one man in the second season who isn't dysfunctionally weak &/or despicable instead stands out because of a passivity bordering on mental illness. And he is depicted as a good guy!
In all the churning of personalities and action, some important features are completely muddled. There is a murder where I never figured out who the victim was. And Campion really loves gratuitous sex scene -- graphic, but feeling like time-fillers. Maybe the worst thing is the sort of consolation prize of a happy-ever-after ending for some of the characters, which is well done, but moments later puts you in "hey -- what the hell was that?!" mode.
I will admit I kept coming back for more and that my admiration for Elisabeth Moss only grew.

I also love, loved Top of the Lake and thought I posted regarding it. I positively agree with everything you stated, most especially with regard to Campion. Jeezums, that first scene with Holly Hunter and her "tribe" was almost laughable, it was that ridiculous.
Elisabeth Moss is truly a gem.

I accidentally found myself on a NZ streak, because tonight I watched Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Totally, totally satisfying entertainment. When watching these things from New Zealand, my brain gets pretty adept at understanding the accent. Maybe too adept, as at one point on the soundtrack Nina Simone was singing "Oh Sinnerman" in a normal (i.e., American) accent and my brain flipped it into Sannymin until the familiar music alerted me to what she was really saying.

Night before last and last night I watched the first and second parts of ABC's “The Story of Diana”. I make no apologies for this because, well just because. But tonight, oh lord, I watched Beyond the Wall, the 6th episode of this season's Game of Thrones. I do not think I will ever blink again for the rest of my life. Also, I believe my breastbone might be permanently s-shaped now, since I was clenching my entire body so hard during some of the action. I have one giant question about this episode. If it was answered last week or this week, I missed it. Here it is in the form of a spoiler: {What the heck?}Why did Jon and his crew need to capture and bring back that wight/zombie thing?

I read the books up to A Feast for Crows then I got frustrated because every time I liked a character they were killed off. We haven't seen any off this latest series altho there are loads of spoilers on fb.
I'm watching Doctor Who from the start of the reboot (Christopher Eccleston). Now watching the early Tennant episodes which are really good altho I never took to Rose...she usurped the viewers place as the Doctor's bestie, a mistake the writers repeated to a certain extent with Clara imo.

It was the pilot (of Big Love) that we watched, actually. I brought the whole 1st season home from the library. I would give it one more episode to sell itself to us, but I think Mr. Kimby is already ready to move on.
Has anyone got anything good or bad to say about "Damages" with Glenn Close?

There isn't a thread dedicated to series TV, is there? Wish there was. Would be hard to go back through 94 pages looking for good series to watch - or bad ones to avoid!

That's a shame. Big Love is awfully entertaining.
I did watch Damages for at least a couple of seasons, but it ultimately lost me. It's one of those shows that deliberately keep you off balance & ultimately the machinations got too baroque for me. Also, Rose Byrne is kind of irritating.

I don't start all of the threads. However, I do sometimes slave over moving posts from other threads onto newly created threads when it is pertinent. If you were cruel enough to start a new thread about series, I would probably suffer for at least a week to move posts onto it.

I think there's more hours in the day in Paris and Oaxaca than there are in Montana... I have considered this as a pre-requisite for the job description of helper..."must spend most of each year in a location of 36 hour days..." This is coupled with "must be able to explain to dinosaurs how to use this forum, using language a three year old can understand." (this will involve the use of the extra 12 hours per diem as required above.)

It would be great if series watchers would go there and list favorite series. Thanks!
