I just looked at that link. Obviously nobody at the Guardian realizes that Polish (like many other languages) has declensions and they put the Polish "Donalda Trumpa" in quotes. I looked up the original and it's because the name is in the genitive case.
I also read some comments from Norwegians who claim they have no reason to want to live in the States.
Is this still Trump playing to his base, and is this base getting a bit smaller? Are these people never ashamed for having voted this guy into office?

It was interesting today in Libération, which is never shy about language, to see that they had translated it as trou à rats -- rat hole. That's a common expression for a terrible place in French, but it's amusing that the newspaper decided that the more important word was 'hole' and not 'shit'. But then it's the kind of paper that doesn't find "shit" vulgar in the first place.

Probably "Norwegians" in shit-for-brains' comment was less about actual Norwegians (Does he know where Norway is?) and more shorthand for "tall blonde White people", i.e., "Aryans". It's not possible to translate shithole even if you're a native English speaker -- only the person using the term can say precisely what he/she means by it. Does it mean anus or does it mean the receptacle portion of the outhouse? |

The comments I heard on France24 were indeed that it showed Trump's racism more than a desire for Norwegian immigrants. The journalists there also said "shithole countries", not bothering to bleep anything out. In English that is, I don't know what they said in French.

Funny, on Radio-Canada more journalists and commentators were saying "pays de merde" rather than "trou à rats".
By the way, a friend recently had a ratshit infestation in her cellar (not a "finished basement"). The people in her condominium building think they have it cleaned up and sealed. Beurrrrrkkkk! (or Yeccccchhhh! in English).
Of course Norway was a byword for Aryan. The Nazis were pissed off back when because not all the citizens of such blonder countries as the Netherlands and the Nordic nations welcomed them. Some did, of course, but so did some European countries where the average skin and hair colour was a bit darker.
We needn't belabour the fact that the ancestors most Afro-descendants not only in the US but also many other American countries had no choice in making the passage. He also threw in the largely Amerindian population of a Central American country. Not only racist but also in very, very poor taste. I think Michaëlle Jean will be relieved that she is no longer the Governor-General of Canada.
I think the only reason Norwegians might want to emigrate to the US is warmer weather (surfers, for example). But those might prefer Australia.

I read his comment as "Shit Hole" not shithole. The difference between the two for me is that Shit Hole means a really nasty PLACE. The other 'Shithole', means the place our digestion exits. In my mind he was definitely referring to AFRICA as a nasty place that stinks. If you have never been here, come and smell the shit for yourself. Some live in shit, some talk shit, some have shit for brains, and a lot treat each other like shit. We are a shitty place  but it's home and we have nowhere else to go. |

Good for her! She definitely does not live in the surrounds of shit close at hand, and neither do I, but she like me, may have to see it on a daily basis. The only placating thing for me is that the shit I see is nowhere near the unbearable shit further north.
