I am not scared about heights...it is the dull thud at the bottom that worries me!

Lovely. Wish him well, and it sounds as if he might also make a good dad!

Seen a photo of him along with the other graduates of the training program with the notice they were starting shift today, that is fantastic!

I hope he won't get teased or called 'Spidy' by the other guys. That's what would happen here.I also hope the general public keep their expectations realistic and let him get on with his life.
BTW ...my fireman son got promoted to Metropolitan Commander (Central) last week. He has earned it too.

Congrats. My definition of heroes is of people who do incredible things at their own risks when they have the choice of doing nothing and being safe. Firemen perfectly fit this - personal - definition.

That is awesome for your son Questa! Congratulations to him! I know that here the process to become qualified to act as a Captain or Platoon Chief are difficult and intense. I am wondering if a Platoon Chief is comparable to a Metropolitan Commander or more like our Deputy Chief or Chief? A Platoon Chief would have the responsibility of all the Fire Halls/firefighters but for his Platoon only (unless called in for overtime on another platoon), the Chief positions are administrative.
99.9% of firefighters usually obtain a nickname here for something job/personality related so something along the line of "Spidy" will without doubt occur, unless something else of fun/tease happened during his training. Everyone calls my husband "Gunner".

Well, the nickname 'Spidey' doesn't mean anything to the French, so that is unlikely. Most nicknames are made from the person's name, so it is more likely they that would call him something like Mamou, Doudou or Gaga, for example.
Congratulations to your son, Questa.
