I seem to recall that the seed cones of sequoias also need to burn to release their seeds.

The Blackboy tree is also called a Grass Tree but it is neither grass or tree or fern. Distantly related to lilies and Aloes it can be as much as 600 years old. If you can germinate seed (I can't) it only grows about an inch a year. The black comes from being burnt in fires. A Blackboy was an Aboriginal servant and no longer used for obvious reasons. Sturt Pea is akso very difficult to germinate and get to flowering but I've seen it done. I've grown Kangaroo Paw without difficulty.

I guess it is just a battle between nature and modern civilisation that will continue to run.

Because it is so hard to propagate the Grass tree ( aka Yacca)is hyper expensive. Ordinary plant centres don't stock them and places that do have to be licenced to take a set number from the wild each year...if they can find them! They are used as decor, so have to be tall enough to look good. Mostly used in hotel grounds where there is security as they are frequently stolen. They are able to live over 300 years and grow up to 4m tall. I just checked prices...$180 for a baby and $850 for one that people won't laugh at, and wish you "Good luck with that!" I was surrounded by Sturt Pea when I did my outback posting. It thrived being driven on, football games and general plant abuse. Lovely with the red and black pea flowers on red sand Tried many times and took in the old folks advice but never got one to germinate. They don't do well out of the desert anyway.
