It seems no-one told Hugo Boss about the turtleneck issue. They're showing them in the men's fall collection...

What a pathetic website... it has "style" in its title but does not seem to know that trends change.
Hammer Pants? er... why no picture of Hammer? Actually the type pictured were for gym-wear made popular by a company called Gorilla-Wear... I have had at least 3 pairs of them many years ago. Hammer wore "parachute pants" which were totally different. Gorillas were fantastic in the gym! Has no-one told these clowns behind the site that fashion is era-sensitive?

Actually, there is some information here (#8) about Sarah Burton, who designed that dress. She does look wonderful, and that was an inspired choice for the occasion.

Yup, Henry himself. I do admire a man who'll marry a woman a head or so taller than himself.
I can't figure out the right click thing when I'm using the IMac, or I'd have posted the shot of Mr. and Mrs. K.
Thanks, Bixa, for that one!

This comment from a reader of today's NYTimes "On the Runway" blog:
It's wonderful how that dress renders two of the most powerful men in the world completely invisible.

Mrs China must be a midget. If you look at any of those photos, she is always the shortest person in it.
I guess that's why they didn't picture her along with the Obamas.

Since the spouse is always included in such invitations, I wonder what diplomatic reason was given for her absence.

She only looks really short when she's in groups of European ancestry people. I think she's fairly petite, but normal -- probably a fairly standard height for Chinese women of her generation. I looked and looked online, and found reference to both Hu and Liu Yongquing landing in Seattle, but no mention of her at the party. Maybe someone can make heads or tails of this: www.70794.com/?p=14238

Nope, somebody will have to translate that into English.
When Sarkozy's wife #2 (Cécilia) decided to spurn the Bush family, she was reported "ill" for every absence and went shopping instead.

It would have been a diplomatic faux pas to shove height-challenged Mrs. C. out of photos, I'm thinking. We err on the side of hugging Queens, this side of the ocean.

They could have stood her on a small platform that would have been discreetly hidden behind Mrs Obama's wide skirt.
Or, they could have used some clever wire contraption to hang her a bit higher up. Once again, somehow behind her hostess's skirt, so that the gap between her feet and the ground wouldn't be visible.

Or they could have had her swoop in like Peter Pan on those wires, neatly symbolizing the lofty position China now holds in the US economy.

Hate to say this, really dislike the gown Ms Obama is wearing up there. What it makes me think of is an old episode of the Cosby show wherein the son, Theo, purchases an expensive shirt for a school dance. When dad Bill finds out, he decries the expense and one of the daughters assures Theo she can make him that shirt. The result is positively ludicrous, with one side of the collar sporting a long 70s-style point and the other side much smaller. Sleeves are of differing lengths, and it appears she may have turned some of the material the wrong way on the grain.
Similarly, that gown looks like someone turned a ten-year-old with no experience making clothing loose with scissors and a sewing machine. I'm quite embarrassed the leader of our country's wife is actually standing there in a gown that looks as though the top was cut from two different patterns and randomly stitched together. The only time I have seen anything approaching the black on that was when I worked at a dry cleaners and a new girl missed an ink pen in a gentleman's coat pocket. Due to the ink dispersing unevenly into the dry cleaning solution, the result was a very expensive and well-made dress coated in ink in the very same way as that so-called dress. Also, what happened to her skirt? It looks like some sort of sling, perhaps for a papoose, I don't really know, was included on her right side? Usually Ms Obama looks so well put together. The one thing I can say for the whole thing, she certainly has the eclat, and red is definitely her color.

Just came across this thread again by accident. Is she still wearing this kind of dress to gala functions or has the world economic situation brought in a bit of simplicity?

There seems to be some kind of law dictating dowdy garments among Royals, even those who are young, attractive and model-slim.

At least she isn't wearing the stupid hats Diana used to have.
And she usually looks much better than this.

I quite liked many of Diana's hats and thought she was able to pull them off in a way many couldn't. I think one needs to be more of a 'hat person' to appreciate them though.

Maybe the hat situation improved after a while, but I remember some of the early pictures and she looked terrible -- dowdy and frumpy. I remember a French fashion magazine suggesting make-overs for her.
And I'm not a hat person. ;D

My guilty secret is that I'm enamored of the British royal family, but Kate doesn't really do it for me. That said, Princess Diana often looked like a girl playing dress-up when she was first married. Kate is definitely more sophisticated, which is why the green dress stands out in such a dud-ly way. Also, I find the way her hair is always artfully arranged over her shoulders irritating. Once Diana found her fashion footing, she mostly looked great despite how horrible the 80s were in general in terms of hair & clothes (shoulder pads!). I agree whole-heartedly with Casimira on the hats. click pic ~

I have always adored Diana. I am in disagreement with you however about Kate. She too is lovely but in a more 'girl-next-door' way. Which I suppose was what Diana looked like when she started out - all that thick fringe hanging right onto her eyebrows and the shy why she cocked her head. But, soon the little duckling became the most glorious swan to sweep the nations of the world right off their feet! Diana, in actual fact has far bluer blood than that of the royal family. She is truly a lady born of a great lineage.
I am hoping Kate will become as stunning in her own special way as she matures with motherhood. I remember that it was after the birth of Harry that Diana really spread her wings, showed her lovely figure and long legs and swept her hair away from her beautiful face. I am so glad William looks a lot like her. Harry I think looks like his grandfather the Late Earl Spencer.

Looking through those photographs, Diana and her style certainly improved with age. At the beginning -- those bows, ruffles, puffy sleeves! Just awful. I wonder who chose those clothes?
And I'm not sure that "blue blood" has anything to do with looks or style. Look at Princess Anne.
