France played a good game, but obviously there was no suspense.
Unlike the match on the verge of ending (Scotland-England) and the one after that.

I'm not surprised by your permanent confusion, Gyro. Carry on.
Congratulations to Ireland for its first victory since 1985 and its first Grand Slam since 1948!
Now if only we could do something to reduce the number of Welsh players with the surname Jones. Very confusing!

That stout does not seem to be doing you much good.

The stout is very rewarding. Unlike yourself, who seems unable to respond with anything other than antagonism

Have you taken a look at the quality of your last 20 posts? Then take a look at my last 20 posts. I rest my case.

Excellent. Carry on, you're such good value. Although it'd be nicer to actually converse, on the assumption that, on the odd occasion, you may actually have something interesting to say.

Cut it out, ladies
Yes Gyro, I do indeed own and wear a kilt for special occasions. There was a pic on the Pics thread until recently. As for the game yesterday, There is no point in having a video ref if they blow the call. Fluteys try for England was clearly a knock on which was never under control. But then, we always expect home cooking from the ref at Twickers.

Is it right about only wearing a tartan connected to your clan/family, or is that something of an urban myth ?

Like club ties? I am not even being snarky; I am just very ignorant about all of these British/UK codes of dress and conduct.

Yes Gyro. Mine is Cameron of Eracht which I take from my mothers side of the family. There are a few that can be worn by anyone, such as Royal Stewart. There is nothing to stop anyone buying any tartan, but if you wear a kilt you will always get grilled about your family and how you qualify to wear it etc.

Okay, I have another question. How many tartan patterns can you identify, or is there some kind of code that at least partially identifies the region/origin/clan?
|
|
|
Post by BigIain on Mar 22, 2009 23:22:43 GMT
Each clan had its own design. Indeed severall designs such as a dark green one for hunting and a showy one for dress occasions.
As for identifying them, there are some more common tartans which I can recognise easily and some that I can name just by thinking of friends who also have the same one.
I can't find a decent link to post, I will try it tomorrow evening.

It's a shame I've come across so many Scots that are too Chip-On-Their-Shouldery about the English, and that far too many people perceive this as being the inherit attitude due to the gutter press, as it's a country with a wild beauty and it's people have a fascinating history.

Its quite funny to ask a stereotypical Scottish Nationalist why exactly they hate England!! Most of them have no substantial answer.

Seeing the situation as an outsider, I can see Scotland as being substantially different from England, just as I can see Ireland as being different. So independence would not shock me. On the other hand, I really know practically nothing about Wales, so if there were a Welsh independence movement, I would really have to read up on it to figure out my opinion.
As a general rule, I am always in favor of any place becoming a republic rather than a monarchy, but we people who have always lived in republics are weird that way.

I have no problem with Scotland being separate; good on 'em I say. Same for Wales and Ireland. Plus, we pump LOADS of money into them anyway; they're something like the 3rd most state subsidised country in Europe, in terms of Government benefit hand-outs, or something like that.
And, it may be slightly wrong, but I was always under the impression that Scottish MP's can sit and vote in OUR parliament on matters relating to England, but not the other way round. Which is wrong.
But I don't think the English government would want to get rid of them because of the oil. Or is it gas ? One of the two, anyway .....

Post by BigIain on Mar 24, 2009 8:45:48 GMT
You are spot on with the oil/gas thing. but I am sure that there is not much left in the existing fields in the North sea?
Breaking away from England would ruin Scotland thus: Taxes would have to go up to subsidise the new state... all the good workers would leave the country rather than pay 7p extra tax on each pound... all big business would move south to Newcastle or Manchester to avoid corporation tax increases. I have posted before (on TTYC?) that several years ago there was yet another vote in Scotland for Independence. It was around 1997 to 2000. They put the question of yes or no to Independence on the voting forms for local elections just to get a feel for the issue. It ended up at around 50 50. The next week, in an open letter to The Scotsman Newspaper, the top 50 Scottish companies stated that they would leave the country and set up South of the border to avoid the inevitable taxation. In those days we were talking world-class companies such as:RBS, Bank of Scotland, Kwik-Fit, Murray Group and suchlike. Basically, Scotland would become a 3rd world country within 10 years of independance.... High unemployment, no transport infrastructure, weak health services, second rate education and so on. But since most Scottish people hate England blindly, they will be led in to Independence like lambs to the slaughter by the "politicians" (and I use that word only because there is no other word to take its place!). They will then have to go begging to Europe for handouts rather than England. And no doubt they would be gob smacked when they discover that they are ranked down there along with the smaller and poorer Eastern states that are currently being admitted to the EU!

The 6 Nations tournament has started again tonight. Paris is already full of kilted Scotsmen, but I have not spotted BigIain yet.
There's still hope, however, because the France-Scotland match isn't until tomorrow afternoon.

Well, France was crushed by England today, so England remains the only country that can make the Grand Slam.
I can't imagine that there is any point in putting those uniforms in a washing machine tonight -- they were so muddy and grass stained, that it all looks hopeless to me.

The first half of the match was pretty entertaining, but the second was all England. That French Neanderthal-looking guy- Chaval?- always makes me smile.

Chabal scares a lot of people. If you check the net, though, you'll see that the shaven short-haired Chabal looks totally innocuous.

I watched the first half and went to eat thinking the French were playing better than the English. Caught the final 5 minutes to see they were losing by 8 points.
Chabal seems to stand out more for his Neanderthal appearance than for his rugby skills. This of course brings him advertising money.
