Mr Warner is a bloody hero. Batted on with massive cramps hitting him all over to get his 200. Stuff that up your nose ACB! The Bay 13 mob were behind every move he made...I'm sure they drove him on. Limped off with assistance looking wrecked. Shades of Rick McCosker in the Centenary Test.

I think Australia and South Pacific have been the advance warning countries that were not heard for 30 - 20 years. Remember the hole in the ozone layer that created mayhem here but was hardly noticed in the Northern Hemisphere? We have expensive campaigns to keep the population out of the sun now and the Stats are scary.
At Christmas lunch we were discussing our Flood, Fire and Famine disasters that we are having almost continually.
My satirical son quickly imitates some Dickensian whining creature who has just seen a melanoma..
." They should have told us, they should have tried to stop the damage. Why didn't they take notice?" (He switches to BBC announcer voice and sits normally)..."
"It has been announced that the Republic of FFF is our new name " " Great", says son, Found, Fought over and finally F**ed.

40 degrees and first real heat. I used to like hot weather with the 'cool change' about 8pm, but now the heat is vicious, killing people in numbers that would cause civil unrest if they were brought to general awareness.

"It is an ill wind that blows no-one any good" The areas that are flooded are now being flooded with tourists. The Councils, police, wildlife and other bodies have set up sight seeing excursions, all guided and safe. The spectacle is drawing crowds and as international tourism is "all too hard" now, many are from distant parts of Oz. Reports say it is stunning to see the river as it has not been like this before. Apart from the terrible losses of life, homes and businesses it has also helped the residents.

The winds have swung north bringing the dry heat, dust and little bush flies. The River surge has entered the more popular area with holiday houses and shops as prepared as possible. The peak is expected to arrive on C'mas eve, already a levee has been breached with the speed of the water doing more damage.
It is weird...like a bushfire in slow motion!

S'pore is such an overload of the senses but looks relaxed and calm, it has a huge population for its size, but doesn't seem crowded. There is obvious wealth for public works and general incomes, yet the island produces no agriculture, mining or manufacturing. I love it when I'm there but can't be bothered to go there, What a puzzle!

If I had known you were coming thus far East I could have met up with you. Hawkers Corner for street food then a quick look in Bugis area...a poor shadow of its raunchier past. South East Asia hotel, Waterloo St now closed in. Everywhere - garish plastic and coloured lights, No...I think I will stay here and tread water and see what floats past. Meanwhile, back at the farm...cotton farm that is...Big cotton mob built a ginormous, drip/spray irrigated plantation near the Murray. They are not popular with Oz generally, and have a strong security team.
So twice five miles of fertile ground With walls and towers were girdled round...
The view from the air shows a couple of holes have opened up in the levees surrounding the property, with a steady flow of water 24/7. As the company has no qualms re "utilizing" other farmers' water from any source, 'not much worry about' is the locals' advice.
Two big-ish rivers up-stream have broken through and are expected to merge with the main Murray in late January. Already the Media calls the vista The Great Inland Sea...What next? Atlantis Australis?Australantis?
I hope you don't mind me posting here about the floods...seems as good as any place...and it is not wet and muddy!

Oh Dear, Kerouac, please don't encourage people to try for a 12 hour bladder, especially when flying. You and most of us here know the dangers of reducing water intake to reduce trips to the toilet. Even if you don't drop dead from a Deep Vein Thrombosis, stroke or coronary it is better to arrive at your destination feeling well and hydrated

The severity of the floods here has brought out some new thinking. One of the towns has built a levee that runs for 21 km and is higher than any river records show.
Another council has noted that a lot of water runs off paved areas and increases the problem, so today they started digging up the main road through the town. They hope than lots of wet stuff sinks into the earth leaving their matching levee bank high and ...er..damp.

I still have the fork and steel which my father used with a flourish when carving the Sunday roasts. the knife got sharpened so often that the blade was worn down to a sliver of steel in the handle...long gone now.
In Bali we had a special meal for discerning patrons upon 24 hours notice. A duck was caught and prepared then rubbed all over with local herbs and spices. Then grated coconut and coconut cream patted all over and the lot wrapped in banana leaves and placed in a hole in the ground with rocks and burning coco husks Took about 6-7 hours to cook and the meat just fell off the bones,

Water, water everywhere...A third surge has appeared and They say it will peak late January and might be more of a problem. The stories coming out of the affected areas are amazing, as are the photos. Vast oceans of water spread to the horizon like the great inland sea it was millennia ago. It will be interesting to see what changes there will be in the topography when the levels drop. As the kids are having a bad time in emergency housing, schools closed etc, they had a Sports Day with the 2 biggest schools competing. Events included the wheelbarrow race with real barrows carrying a sand bag and shotput like events with sacks weighing set amounts.

The rivers are still rising and the levee banks getting higher every day. Already 4000+ houses are doomed to inundation as the waters are swallowing up the small towns. Electricity, gas and other needs have been turned off and police and security services guard the deserted settlements from looters. More concerning is that a 2nd peak is expected to ooze down the river in a few weeks. It is still cold and wet here...no Spring this year, looks like today is about 16C and in a few days it will hit 34 plus.

Fruit leather is an old treat...I remember my grandfather making it in the 1940s. It is just a method of drying/preserving fruit to use when it is out of season. Mainly stone fruit plus pears, apples and quinces etc., it looks like strips of leather and the texture is sweet and chewy.
RATS!! now I want some.

That was my first reaction too, K2. Then I thought of the size trucks and machinery needed, distances from source to export point, roads, bridges and airstrips built, workers and ancillary staff needed. housing and feeding them, ensuring that sacred grounds are not threatened and searching for title deeds etc. Placating the relevant Unions and getting the Green support could take years...
Then I realised why Oz has no emergency-sand-bag exporting business!

Waiting, waiting for the river to peak. There has been non-stop rain in the headwaters of the rivers that feed the Murray...a second peak will hit in late December. A cargo ship carrying half a million sandbags and cement bunkers has left India to help in the work. NZ and Singapore have sent troops to assist as well. Are they still mentioning it on overseas media? There is some pretty spectacular photography getting around.

Not on my door step, Tod but through the veranda roof in 2 places! And bjd, I can remember discussing on here my observations on extremes over 10 yrs ago. Kerouac...With so many huge electricity towers down, the networks that weren't so damaged had to stay OFF as fools electrocuted themselves trying to see the spectacle.
DRAMA? We got AWESOME!

Tues 15th. Adelaide and environs had 3 days of storm cell battering over the weekend. Many major power lines were brought down by large trees falling on them, some high tension connectors to Victorian nets also affected. Chain saws have been going day and late at night. Our emergency service of 2500 workers have called for help...doing 16 hours shifts already...Vic and Qld on their way.
Schools are doing final exams this week, but the electricity is down in most of the areas. As all the work is done using computers these will have to be re-scheduled. "They" think that it will be back to normal by tomorrow then the warnings are out for a similar cell next weekend! Smart people have bought generators.
I have never seen rain as solid as these cells. They rumble with distant lightning strikes. then right overhead crashes a bolt and the rain hits like a weapon. Winds over 110 kph blast everything and the trees start dropping huge branches or falling over in the soaked soil. The rain drops are turning into spray as they travel and the combined noise is like a roar.

May I tell you a bit about the current situation in Oz. It is not so much about weather as a slow motion disaster. The main river in the country is the Murray which rises in the High Mountains of the Great Dividing Range. It turns inward and flows westward, being fed by dozens of lesser rivers. It doesn't take far for it to reach the ancient lands where the Murray crawls along at almost sea level, on long snake-like loops and diversions, billabongs and ox-bow areas. Finally it reaches a system of lakes which let the water go into the lakes before into the ocean.
This year we have had almost continual floods from the swollen rivers all along the eastern seaboard. All the rivers have overflowed and the damage astronomical. We are watching the Murray as the water levels rise and rise, passing all the previous levels. In the last 50 years the holiday business has boomed, now the swollen and moving inexorably waters are washing it all away .Statistics are meaningless. Video can only show water to the horizon. People are sandbagging in an attempt hold back the strong current, yesterday had 4000 houses lost.
More later...

Oz has the same problems but the bite is more like a strong nibble. Everywhere in the hospitals they are advertising for all staff following the burn out of 2020-2022. Ambulance crews are having to stay with their casualties waiting for a vacant slot in admissions, some for hours.
