Memo to Charles...order a box of regal ball point pens and avoid embarrassment from recalcitrant 18th century technology.

I have been told that the remains of the former Queen are transported to the burial in a decoy vehicle, to be swapped over just before the internment. That would be a terrible blow to the whole nation, given the faultless protocol so far.

Out here in the Colonies life is going on as normal. Very little actual grief shown, just hours of old film and interviews interspersed with current journos reading from clip boards and prophesising who they think will wear the crown...switch to 5 minute info on Crown...switch to repeat info on TV series of that name...etc
The weather is cold and wet so there are not many outdoor things going on, we all know Charles will be King so there is little interest there, we hope Meghan gets her act together and supports Harry, and Andrew drops down a mine shaft while inspecting an opal field.
HRH Anne is still admired by all, specially since the carriage incident.

I wonder how many grandparents have quietly snuck off and had the shots while minding the kids over the school vacations. They would remember the bad old days and the epidemics of polio and measles and take action themselves.

Little joke
My Presbyterian friend preached that," Predestination is the basic belief of the Presbyterian Church."
Except sometimes she got "Procrastination" mixed up with it.

No matter if your notes are scrambled and inconclusive, your local history branch will still love you if you tidy them up and donate them to the branch. They want the memories and experiences of the ordinary person. not journos. Mr Samuel Pepys notes are a good example.

The reality is...Royals are there to make magazines and stories. These are to reassure the people that all is well in a country that patently has serious problems. The media joins in with this fairy tale which tides them over until things do get OK again. Getting the next lovely cover shot is worth its weigh in gold (almost) and the press virtually run the country.

I have a feeling that Putin is going to make major attacks while the world is watching the UK and its drama.

I think in the shuffling of positions it would be good to see HRH Anne become Princess of Wales. As the Princess Royal she has been hard-working and I think she is not recognised enough. Historically the English King was doing a count of which Nobles were loyal to him. They say that when the crowds roared for a Welsh Prince, the King held up his new born son and said, " This is your Prince, He has to be the Prince of Wales because he doesn't speak a word of English".
As the position signifies loyalty to the Crown and identifying those against it, there is no rule (I THINK)that could not be modified to allow for a woman Princess to swear allegiance to Charles as he did to his mother. Andrew and Harry would not b accepted by the Brits and by the time the children of the next generation are old enough, who knows what languages will be spoken.
Meanwhile Rest in Peace, Lizzy, You done good!

Has anyone here checked into the floods in Pakistan? I know this thread is for our weather but what a decision this chap has to make...release the upper dam and destroy the towns, kill hundreds and no cr0ps next year, or not release the dam and see a larger city get flooded.

Two more days until the Nagasaki anniversary, so you can start revving up your atomic pride. I am surprised that you get excited about the 100,000 of lives lost at Hiroshima. What about the millions who died from nuclear fall out in the ensuing years? Ghastly burns and radio active disease for years, internal and external diseases for generations. I nursed an 18 year old Japanese girl, dying from leukaemia. Her mother died in the first blast. She held no hatred or arguing back and forward...in fact she taught me to make paper cranes.

Busy, pre-holiday time. Aldi running out of stock so several big delivery trucks unloading at the rear of the store. Local citizen taking a short-cut through the delivery bay whips out his phone and records several trays of freshly made sandwiches as they fall onto the dirty ground. He films the store manager and other suits picking up the food and arranging it on the platters again, then taking them into the store, Local citizen takes records to TV channel that loves scandal...Oh Happy Days! The Court also had a field day but that Aldi ran at a loss for ages.

And I'll throw in Woolworths aka "Woolies", Coles, Foodland (a chain of owner operated supermarkets) and recently *shudder* Aldi. The first 2 account for 85% of sales in Oz. they have the full scene as bjd has. ALL the staff have to know locations of goods and if you ask workers where some item is, they will lead you to the item and hand it to you.
Aldi made the classic mistake of underestimating the power of Aussie loyalty. They aimed for a start-up in a September but the shops were only a pile of building materials and goods were unattractive... Strike 1. Then there were hygiene reports which took them to court...Strike 2. Then people started looking at the 'wages and conditions' of the workers and found there was/is much exploitation, specially for juniors...Strike 3.
You may remember that Oz threw Starbuck's out of the country because their coffee was awful and overpriced.
One day I'll tell you how Spring Gully Pickles kept trading and how the Oz economy was saved by Tim Tam biscuits.

Lugg, I am totally frazzled and have been for the many years since all the above came into existence. My mobile phone account is so rarely used that I am billed every 3 months, not monthly as is the norm, because I spend less than $A 10 each month. I have a landline which also is cheaper.

Do you get a TV series "Bondi Rescue"? It was made for international release and is shown on planes before landing.

In Oz kids learn early about rips. as we call them. Various rips are given names, like "Backpacker's" which forms up near a vicious wall of rocks at Bondi Beach. Each morning the lifeguards paddle around the waters with dye pots marking out the safest areas to swim or body-board. Then they mark this with 2 red and yellow flags in the sand, and woe betide anyone swimming outside the flags.
Only Bondi has lifeguards, all the other hundreds of beaches have life savers The latter are volunteers who give their time to pull stupid, disobedient swimmers out of the rips. If you are caught in a rip 1) Do not panic. Raise an arm 2)Don't swim against it, float or swim across the flow. Most of the drownings are people newly arrived in Oz and really need to learn.

My kids and I had an imaginary dog who had all sorts of adventures. His name varied from Pogo to Gopo...I don't know why. Each evening while they bathed, the dog "told " me of that day's doings. Once the boys were in bed I would pass on the story with lots of "and what do you think happened next?" I wish I had recorded some...3 yr old and 5 yr old boys just grow up too fast!
