Only ever had Caleys once. To be fair, any major supermarket now has a reasonable range of bottled beers that are worth a try. Most go a bit 'local' too, but I don't know what they may mean in Herts ....

I have not drunk any yet, but today I bought some Tsing Tao Stout at the Chinese supermarket. The thought was so ludicrous that I knew I have to try it.

What was ludicrous about it ?

Just the idea of the makers of Tsing Tao, one of the most horribly watery and tasteless beers in the world making a stout.

Actually, I drank one of the Tsingtao stouts and I thought it tasted just fine. Keep in mind that I am not an expert on stouts -- I drink them rarely.

But there are many many stouts and porters being brewed in America these days, and that country really IS the home of the most horribly watery and tasteless beers in the world

No, no, the U.S. can't hold a candle to Asia or Mexico for brewing watery beers. But those other places at least have the excuse of being tropically hot, which gives a perhaps valid reason for watering down the beverages.
I've have indeed seen a few American stouts, but I would say that it represents less than 1% of the market.

Possibly, but there are many micro-brewries in America that are doing good things. It is the New World of ale, much like South America was to wine years back.

Now drinking a Kasteel Cru. It IS quite champagney, but not massively tasty in all honesty. Which is a shame.

While I get cheap beer here, which I'm happy about, I do miss the variety you get in Europe.
I tried a VB the Saturday before last, Gyro, nothing seems to have stuck in my memory, as you predicted. I've also tried to find some IPAs but nothing doing here. Instead we've got a new very cheap import from Vietnam called Zorok. Only drinkable ice cold...

Yeah, I don't think it's much of a surprise that you can't get IPA there. Which, obviously, is a shame.

Tried a couple of James Boags yesterday. It's a beer from Tasmania that I quite liked! You should try it, Gyro. Quite hoppy, slightly bitter, very fresh tasting but not too bubbly. This was the one I had, the pub only carries this one: www.boags.com.au/#/brands/premium/regular/background/

Yeah, I've had boags before. It doesn't stand out, but isn't as bad as VB ...
