And a happy St. George's Day to you and to all who celebrate it! I lifted this from Wikipedia: St George's Day is celebrated by the several nations, kingdoms, countries, and cities of which Saint George is the patron saint, including England, Germany, India, the old kingdoms and counties of the Crown of Aragon in Spain — Aragon, Catalonia and Valencia; Portugal, Cyprus, Greece, Georgia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of Macedonia, and the cities of Moscow in Russia, Genova in Italy, Ljubljana in Slovenia, Beirut in Lebanon, Qormi and Victoria in Malta and many others. ... ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_George%27s_Day) Apparently, England is the only country which celebrates St. Geo's day as its National Day, but it's most surprising how many countries have him as their patron saint. How did everyone celebrate?

I don't know anyone who celebrates it. I'm just happy to be English and live in my country.

I sent my best wishes to a Swiss friend with that name today. "Feast days" are always an excuse for a party in some of the French-influenced zones. Even though he grew up in Lenzburg (of confiture fame), his mother is romande (French Swiss) and the tradition lingers.

I've never seen St Georg's Day celebrated in Germany. But then I lived in the puritan north for a long time. Maybe they celebrate it in the Catholic areas?

Whoa, baby ~~ look at that! Pookie's thread about Anzac Day got nine responses. That's more than twice as many as St. George's Day got. What could this mean? *carefully marks July 4 and September 15 in big letters on calendar*

Not taking it personally; merely an observation and an opinion.

Many of us out here are bitter ex-colonials. I'm sure that's the explanation.

True. Besides, not only could I keep talking, but I could find excuses to link to certain posts of mine that have been cruelly ignored. Not that I keep track.

But St. George's Day is not a holiday, is it? After all, not even May 1st is a holiday in England.

What has a holiday got to do with it ?
Anyway, you two don't have to bother; you can go back to posting loads of OP's elsewhere and thinking that makes this place look active.

Well, the subject is fascinating, don't you think?
Years ago I read a book about the dragon myths in England. I think it was called The Great Orm, but who knows. Anyway, it referenced creatures such as the Loch Ness monster, and proposed that prehistoric reptiles persisted in the cold deep waters around the UK for long enough to embed themselves in human memory.

I'll bet if this thread was about another country's national day, it would have got more than 4 replies ..... That's for sure...just think, if I post about Canada Day, the sheer volume of replies will probably paralyze the forum!!! Don't be sad, I was so overwhelmed with the emotional feeling of your day that I simply didn't have the strength to post.

It must be awful not to know what to say or how to make a title for an OP.

Whatever. Now that he's gone, there's more for us to drink!
Jazz? Kerouac? Look, he's gone and left these lovely artisanal stouts for us to try.
What was that cracking sound? Sheesh -- did one of you sit on the longbow?!

Oh, I see, It's all down to the title of the OP is it ?
Nice. Still, I applaud your attitude as mods, both of you. You must be very proud.

Oh damn, there he is again.
Actually, the title of an OP is quite important, not for the people who work on a site since they unfortunately read just about everything, but for the other participants who just skim over things and only click on what looks interesting.
Isn't that what you do?

What was that cracking sound? Sheesh -- did one of you sit on the longbow?! Well, it wasn't me and if either of you drunkenly sat on the longbow, I'll box you upside the head! We are in the middle of the story of the longbow and I want to see it through to the end!!!
