This is quite a small genre, since many animated films now try for both audiences -- sugar-coated for the kids with lots of hidden jokes for the adults. Movies like Shrek or Wall-E were made to appeal to both publics. However, some animated movies are not for children at all. The recent Waltz with Bashir is an example of this. The earliest one that I can remember was the dreadful Fritz the Cat back in the 1970's. Every now and then, an animated film for adults slips through, however. Last weekend I saw the amazing $9.99, and Australo-Israeli movie about the residents of an extremely Streamline Moderne building -- a man and his two adult sons, an old man whom nobody will listen to except the homeless guy who committed suicide earlier and grew wings, a shiftless student with three miniature friends that he gives beer to with an eyedropper, a top model who wants her boyfriends to remove every hair on their body -- and even more than that. All of these people interact, and it is happy and sad and tender -- and it is all done with clay animation like Wallace and Grommit. If it ever becomes available in your part of the world, I highly recommend it. Can you think of other adult animated films worthy of note?

All I can think of is how creepy I've always found clay animation. Has it gotten way more sophisticated?

I have a friend who runs out of the room screaming if she sees Gumby.
