This YouTube video of the Bet Giyorgis church and the activities of the villagers in Lalibela completely transports me to another world. Several churches like this were hewn out of the bedrock from the outside in. They are all just one single piece of carved rock. Can you imagine the energy it took to do this by hand?

Transporting, indeed! The mind boggles even at the concept: "let's dig down and create buildings in the bedrock as an expression of faith."
I know so little about Ethiopia, and love this glimpse of its terrain and customs.

I took my mother to Ethiopia while my father took care of my grandmother. That was around 1983. I will post photos some day.

The photo of the church is so interesting. Is it a preserved now for tourists to see?

I think those "churches in rock" are not preserved for tourists. They are used by the Ethiopians during religious celebrations. I remember seeing a video on the BBC website not too long ago.
Another place on my list of places to go.
