Pretty flower portraits, bjd. I’ve given up on planting anything at the house, since the deer regard everything I plant as a salad bar. But these chives have naturalized in my whiskey barrel planter and the deer don’t eat them. I think the flowers are pretty, but I also snip a few leaves onto baked potatoes with sour cream, too. (The broad leaves are from Mock orange shrubs the birds planted in the barrel.)

The columbines are self-seeding descendants of some I planted years ago. Safe behind a fence.

And this shrub, I think it’s a Weigela, is one we planted to replace the gorgeous 35-year old Burning Bush that the rabbits girdled.

Kimby, we have 3 of those bushes as well and they are in full bloom with the most flowers on them ever.
I am going to pass on the information regarding the chives to my sister-in-law, their home is on a deer path and she has given up on planting anything. However, I think she would enjoy the chives for the flowers and the harvest.

Here’s a wild orchid that sprang up last year. A lady slipper or moccasin flower. It’s back this year, too.

That’s a solar light but I didn’t plant the violas. They just came up.

Kimby, I've seen your Lady's Slipper presented among the desirable, exotic orchids at shows here. It's a beauty!
I covet that big ball of Calibrachoas! They're one of my favorites -- all the cheerful beauty of petunias without the sticky icky deadheading.

The first Iris has started blooming. It’s called Cimarron Trail. Actually it bloomed while we were back in town. I picked two spent blooms off this stem before taking its picture. But there’s lots more buds to come, and of two other varieties. Like dozens! And then three clumps with no buds at all…
