Roses here are generally sold without names. I'm not fond of the hybrid teas, but thought this one redeemed itself from the rigidity of that bunch by its sheer oddness.

Me either. But,yes, there are some exceptional hybrids.I am real fond of 'Double Delight'(also Danny Devito's favorite if you recall ).

Oh, isn't that pretty! I love how it has that yellow hue in the centre.

Didn't know that about Danny DeVito. I, too, really like Double Delight and you did her great justice with that lovely picture. See if this rings a bell ~~ there is a rose that used to grow in the City Park rose garden. It's a somewhat deeper red on the top side than DD, but the undersides of the petals are white. It's more sedate than DD, and quite nice.

Does not ring a bell B. I am so bad with the modern roses, terrible :-/but I will look for. They are all in second flush now at the gardens. Or they were...until all this confounded rain/

(*sniffle*) Please tell your mother that this Camellia I propagated from an old garden in New Roads.LA. May have name confused,it's either 'Pink Perfection' or "Debutante'. Have to check.Be sure to show her the 'Alba Plena' as well.

That is one of my absolutely favorite roses. Gorgeous photo!
I opened this thread to show my mother last night, and as I stopped scrolling on each camellia, she instantly provided the name.

casimira, I love this picture!
Were you lying on the ground to take this picture? That's the perspective, to me, anyway. I'm thinking not, though...given the rain you've had.. .

Thanks Cristina. No,was standing. Plants are quite mature and are level with my second story balcony. Will take shot from above tomorrow. Tomorrow will be sunny and will see and hear hundreds of honey bees. My electric meter is right next to and one time the meter reader lady came and heard all the hummming. I was afraid she would be freaked out. She was enthralled with and wanted to stay and hang out

Hostas are such a hot weather bloom here. Beautiful.
Casimira, you might remember the Linnaean House at the Botanical Garden, with its midwinter blooming camelias? I had no idea they could be in bloom now within a day's drive from here. So gorgeous.
They have fragrant olive trees there that give the greenhouse that amazing aroma. Do those trees grow near you at all?

It's definitely hot weather here right now, Lola. A mild chuckle about your fragrant olive query -- somewhere on here both Casimira & I have waxed eloquent about sweet olive. To me it is one of the absolute top fragrances. They grow all over the Gulf south. You see huge examples of them, with the smell wafting over entire neighborhoods. I believe their bloom is triggered by sudden changes of temperature. Read the comments here to see how delirious people become over sweet olive: davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1450/That is an active discussion, and one man says he has them growing in zone 6b. Perhaps you could find out if they'd be happy in St. Louis.

That must be why they call it the Sweet Sunny South. Thanks, bixa! I need to mine these categories more.

Lola,I virtually lived at the Missouri Botanical Gardens while in Saint Louis!!!! Loved that place. As for Sweet Olive,it would be iffy there I think.Check with the folks at the Botanical Garden. Be mindful though, they are very slow growers, even here. For another great description of it's fragrance in a more lyrical mode,go to Poem of the Day for Thanksgiving Day(11/26) My dear friend Julie Kane,an accomplished poet wrote. And do try and visit here more .

B.,I have never seen these guys in bloom. They look so much like tuberose! What a surprise bloom, never would have recognized in a plant quiz.

Many of us find it hard to give a mother-in-law's tongue house room.
Apparently they're more likely to bloom if they're pot bound, which is pretty easy to achieve accidentally. You must have the single tuberose, as most around here are more rounded -- another fabulous aroma.
You all should have seen the hummingbird working the hosta flower today. She/he thinks that is fine fare indeed.

Yesterday as I was rushing around,I saw the first sweet pea of the year in bloom. Just the one. It was pure white.

It's a he. White throat, a she. Little dots of color, an immature. For most hummer species, this works. BTW, when will we see a flower picture with a hummer in it?

I had the hummingbird feeder right outside the kitchen window when I lived in Louisiana. There are quite a few different kinds of hummingbirds there, & it was easy to closely observe them at the feeder. The hummers here really like all the plants I have on the porch ledge, but the backlighting makes it hard for me to see details unless I happen to be right there when they zoom up.
Go back to page 3 of this thread and look at Reply #85.
