When mine acts up I always check the browser to see if there is an update waiting in the wings.

Mine slowed right down a few days ago. Websites hanging, photos and documents taking a long time to open and so on. Fan running on high. Took me ages to trace a Windows update that kept trying to be downloaded and failing over and over again. I'm now running the Task Manager in the background just to see if something comes back.

My Kindle Fire seems to have died.

I had one of them and it lasted ok but as soon as it started playing up I ditched it and went back to a normal Kindle where the battery lasts (a lot) longer for reading and a small Lenovo tablet for any other stuff. That has lasted about five years so far without any problems (hope to not tempt fate saying that).

The update finally succeeded on its 5th or 6th try with a little persuasion from me.

I have 3 kindles, got the first, basic one in 2012 and it's still going strong altho my son uses it more than I do. We got kindle fires in 2013, the one I use most of the time for audiobooks is still heavily used, clunky but reliable. I bought a slimmer, snazzy version a few years later and that was my favourite one for audiobooks until I dropped it in the sink (don't ask). I managed to dry it out ok sealed in a box of dry rice grains for 3 days...but ever since it the volume control hasn't worked properly. It has a tendency to suddenly go to full volume or fpdown to zero volume...so I rarely use it for audiobooks. I don't like the screen on the kindle fire models...impossible to read outside if there is the slightest hint of sun.
I bought my husband a sort of kindle/tablet a couple of years ago as a present as he really only likes audiobooks these days. I've made us both little satchels so that we can listen to books when we are pottering about doing laundry, cooking, ironing etc.
Our main problems with them are that we get through so many headphones, I'm always breaking mine...Jeff often uses the Bose ones I bought him for his 65th birthday but as I only have hearing in one ear I prefer to use a single earphone. I'm always damaging the wires or bending the jack plug thing.

I can't even count the number of ear plugs I have replaced over the years. Probably at least 50. Thank god they're usually very cheap.

I'm always damaging the wires or bending the jack plug thing. As Kerouac points out they are cheap, but it you have to keep buying them, it adds up. Not only that, but unless you have spares on hand, when a pair breaks you have nothing until you go out to replace it. I have a pair of Sony headphones that I like because they're light and foldable. What I don't like is that they have a cable. I can't count the times I've gotten up from in front of the laptop and almost dragged it off the table because I forgot I was attached to it with the earphones. So finally I did a bunch of research and in anticipation of this year's travel (ha!), I purchased a pair of bluetooth over-the-ear noise cancelling headphones. God, I love them! The noise cancelling feature can be turned on or off. I haven't had much reason to use it because of outside noise, but quite often it enhances poor audio quality. The fatly padded 'phones hug the ears and blot out lots of sound anyway. And the lack of a cable is just life-changing, since you aren't tethered to whatever device you're using. Mine are not anywhere near the same galaxy price-wise as Bose headphones, but they got good reviews on quality of sound, build quality, etc.

He flies to Glasgow this afternoon and his mother and brother left at 7 to drive up with his belongings. It was all pretty fraught.

We went through that scenario when my son went to high school as a boarder. He was only about 13. It was far more daunting for him as he faced having to learn a lot about the senior boys , like prefects names, all the names teachers at this huge school. Luckily fagging was outlawed, so he did not have to shine shoes or sit and warm the toilet seat during winter for head of house…..etc etc. Your young man will do just fine, but I fear you are going to have it hard. Chin up Mick, he is about to make you very proud.

Both of Mick's young men are lethal cricketers so it won't be long before they will have adoring juniors to offer to carry their equipment etc
Sorry Mick. I forgot to congratulate you and the Poms for the splendid wins your team had over our latest pathetic excuse for a First Class team. The latest buzz around town is the Boxing Day Test will be played at the Adelaide Oval. Melbourne is still fighting the virus and only just holding out.

Is it just me, or, do other people find it annoying and dismissive when one conveys a word phrased message to someone and the reply is 4 or 5 emojis? For starters, I don't have a "smart phone", (by choice), but, even online in a PM getting a reply with multiple emoji's makes me feel like my words mean nothing. I use emoji's on here only when I want to get a point across and not have a post misconstrued or to emphasize what I have already put into words. Plus, I have to squint to see them and resent having to put on my reading glasses to figure out what they are meant to convey. One is usually just enough in most cases.

I can never figure out what all but the simplest ones mean, and I refuse to use a decoding list.
In most cases I am not annoyed, because already the fact that I sent a text message generally trivializes the subject to begin with, so receiving one or more emojis in return at least acknowledges that the message was received. Plenty of messages go completely unanswered. Maybe people just find me annoying.

I try not to forget that a huge number of people send at least 20-30 text messages a day, while I send maybe 5 a week. Once people are swept up in this crap, there is no way they will find the time to write a real reply to most messages, even if they know that they should. Either we have to accept this or eliminate these people from our relations.

Butt-headed, adult family members, totally set in their ways, who complain about other family members for not taking their (usually unasked for) advice, and then not taking advice themselves, even when it is based on the giver’s knowledge and experience. Basically, people who always believe themselves fo be right even when they don’t have all the facts, think their way is the only way, and are surprised when not everyone agrees. They’re also surprised when sometimes things don’t go as planned. I’m learning, with this particular family member, to offer my opinion only when asked, and then only once. Clearly there’s much more to this, but will refrain from more complaining. Though it does feel good to vent.

Nope. No family feud. Just concerns for the health of someone whose life choices are not in line with mine, the CDC, the WHO, and good common sense.
