Our water comes from the village a km and a half away which comes from the town ten minutes drive away. Came home a couple of days ago and there's water all over the patio. Turns out there's a pipe under there (which I knew as I watched where all the water pipes were laid) that was leaking. Got that fixed and the next day the main pipe from the village is leaking just near the house. Still waiting for that to be fixed, though I've made the job easier for them by digging it up. Found out for some reason there is a high water pressure being produced from the pumping station in the town and several in the village have had burst pipes as well. The pressure does seem to vary a few times every year.

Lionel Messi is my peeve today. It's not really his fault (except for the fact that he exists), but today I could not watch a single news programme without the news being "Messi, Turkish fires, Messi, Greek fires, Messi, Algerian fires, Messi, California fires, Messi, Martinique lockdown, Messi..." And this was not just the French media because when I switched to Sky News, BBC and CNN they were all broadcasting the Messi press conference live.
Has the world come to this? (answer: yes)

At least it gives us a respite from Covid.
What i love is people complaining about the money he makes... Wtf ? He doesn't steal the money! The money comes from the same people paying a fortune to go see 11 guys running after a ball or paying for a cable that transmits their matches... Messi is 100 times better than I, at least financially.

Soeaki g of money, met pet peeve is Panda, the cat we gave to my mother in law.
She went for a walk (the cat, not the mil), got caught by a car (again, the cat, oof). 150 meters from our vet, good news. It was he who called me, our cats have a transmitter with our contact details). She survived the night - good - but her basin is shattered. A orthosomething for cats will insert metal plates and reconstruct the puzzle. She should be ok.
Our wallet will suffer too... 1500 euros, no insurance !
(Bah, that is what money is for... better there than for wine bottles).

Her "basin" (bassin) is her pelvis, for you non-Frenchspeakers. Will the cat ever be in good condition again, Whatagain?

Bro canceled our lunch. He got a tear/rupture in his right eye. Retina not detached but must get surgery. A sense of déjà vu...

Good news.
Bro tear is small, should heal by itself.
Cat survived, is in good shape (was completely drugged when we saw it). Left part of pelvis is now ok (a shard of bone is loose but otherwise ok) and right side is 3/4 mended too many shattered small bones to fix a letal plate). So the cat will most probably walk like John Wayne, may not be able to jump as easily as before on all surfaces, inc kitchen desk when preparing food.
So, looks like a happy end story.

I feel for the driver of the motor vehicle. Could have swerved and got in a real accident.

If the cat becomes clumsy, your mother in law can become a YouTube star with cat videos.

It's clear that there are cats that just love slipping down stairs one at a time - maybe the carpeting feels good. But, to the people who put their pussycats in a cardboard box and sent them flying down the stairs....Shame on you. Not only terrifying for the poor cat but darn stupid IMO.

I like looking at the port of Southampton where the ferries come and go with regular movement - loading and dispatching thousands of vehicles a day. I find it quite interesting but lately not only does the live cam pick up all the traffic noises but I get all the Port Captains transmissions to and from the various ships coming and going. At first it was fascinating to hear when the Brittania or another Cunard cruise ship would be departing, and various other goings on in the port like diving operations and safety drills. Even the Red Funnel ferries took to the air now and again, but it has become a crackling noise with voices to and fro. I have to turn the volume right off now. How on earth am I able to hear all this private conversation ? Has the YouTube channel found it's way onto the broadcast channel 12 of the Southampton port authority? Maybe somebody can test this for themselves by going to YouTube and typing in "Southampton Ferries Live"... I would be interested to find out if the messages/announcements also comes onto your TV.

Panda is recovering. She starts to walk again and is no longer disoriented. I wonder how cats realize they got 'briken' and traumatised.
Josephine, our oldest cat, above 20, got a lethal injection today. She made a cardiac arrest last night and had to be terminated.
Kids are crying, mrs whatagain is crying and i have no specific feeling. Which bothers me.

You don't need to cry to mourn. I did not cry for the death of either of my parents, whom I loved dearly. I cried quite a bit for the death of my grandmother, but only in my bed at night.

I cried for months after Renzo died (he was of the same vintage as Josephine). I had made the lethal appointment (terminal kidney disease) but he died the night before, so we just took the body to the vet's for cremation.

Maybe the trauma of the other kitty’s car accident has numbed you to losing your old kitty whose time had come. The kids aren’t old enough to appreciate the concept of “lived long enough”…

Kids are crying, mrs whatagain is crying and i have no specific feeling. Which bothers me. I would re-assure them that Josephine was well past her prime and as she could not speak she could not tell you all the aches and pains elderly people suffer from. In human years she must have been well over a 100. She lived a good life and so it follows she deserved a good death by simply going to sleep. I was once waiting our turn at the vets practice with my dog and watched a young vet put a cat to sleep. As he administered the injection ( which is a overdoes of anaesthetic), he gently stroked the cats head. When he stopped I knew it was over. He did his job with such love and compassion . Be happy for Josephine.

I have cried more over the deaths of my beloved pets than I have over dearly departed family and friends. 20 is a good run for a cat. RIP Josephine.
My current pet peeve is that our landlord has given us only an hours notice before sending over an exterminator to spray the grounds and the inside of the teensy apartment where we are living. Not only inconvenient but inconsiderate.

My peeve was different a few weeks ago. We have a bug man who comes once a year (even though we have no bugs roaches, which I guess proves that it works, since they were a problem in the past). The date and time were posted downstairs, and I stayed home all day long beyond the posted time, but the guy never came to my apartment. But I think that he actually did come to the building, since the notice had been removed at the end of the day.

Kerouac we have followed in your footsteps with waiting for someone to turn up at the appointed time. Yesterday we had an arrangement that the Solar man would come to our house for a meeting and discussion on the next phase of our solar installations. 5 o"clock came and went as Mr.Tod paced up and down the lawn - I sat having a glass of the goodstuff. By 5.45 it was growing dark so I came indoors. At 6.15 Mr.Tod also threw in the towel and we gave up. Lo and behold around 8pm a phone call with no apology just a re-scheduling of the meeting for between 8.30 and 9.30 this morning. Of course we knew it wouldn't happen so I mad a delightful omelette for breakfast. What happens....he pitches and is still here after an hour. The breakfast still waiting.....

I think we've all had interesting times with deliveries and workmen. One delivery we arranged involving furniture arrived two days early and just phones us to let us know he was outside and couldn't get an answer to the door. Not surprising as we were still in a different country. He wanted to leave the furniture just outside the door. Mrs M told him if he does and it gets stolen, which it would, she'll make sure the money comes out of his wages. He said he'd come back on the right day, which he did.

From what I gather, Mrs. M is not someone to be trifled with. Something I admire and respect about her.
Here we have an unprecedented number of "porch pirates". Brazen and oblivious to the threat of being caught on camera they lie in wait (usually on bicycles) they walk right onto people's porches in broad daylight.

Mrs Mark is an intelligent person who can squash any brain of any individual who follows ridiculous orders. I would expect nothing less of a person who has such high qualifications. Here we have never experienced "porch Pirates" but have seen them on YouTube. Why not here you ask? No one is dumb enough to get something delivered to their home except - a PIZZA! Deliveries are done to office buildings and shops but as far as I am aware, nothing comes to your home. And...by-the-by, How on earth do you deliver something through a big iron gate? Most properties are cordoned off with fencing and gates.

I've seen a number of the videos YouTube videos about that -- collecting Amazon packages after they are left in front of the door. The thieves probably have a lot of surprises when they open the boxes. I ordered something from Amazon today which would certainly interest fewer than 1% of the people who might see it.

Who eats the charge when packages are stolen from the porch? It's never happened to me although I seldom (by today's standard, at least) get package deliveries. Knowing that would explain a lot.

Who eats the charge when packages are stolen from the porch? Interesting question. If I send my son something at his home in Las Vegas, I can track the package right up to watching the location of the delivery truck on a map as it wends its way to his front door. Finally, there will be a photo of the package on his porch. This theoretically protects the driver, showing that the package was delivered. However, what is to stop the driver from making away with the package after taking the picture, or porch pirates from swooping in and stealing it?

Post by onlyMark on Aug 27, 2021 7:38:14 GMT
There are these door bell cameras that show the delivery person taking a photo of the package on the doorstep, picking it back up again and taking it themselves.

Those cameras are utterly worthless. Even if they capture the thief in the act of stealing the parcel, the odds of finding them are very slim.
