Wherever I travel I make a point of visiting the local market to get a glimpse into daily life. I took these at Carmel Market in Tel Aviv last September. Halvah and pastries - oh so sweet! Death by a thousand puffs... Candy Quarry Not entirely sure... floor sweepings? Tin Pan Alley Olive ya Bebe.. Who gives a fig? More beans please! Toss this... Pick me, pick me! I was told the cherry tomato was developed in Israel... Hot, hot hot! A special treat for Rosh Hashana Sardines and such... Holy Mackerel! And for afters...

Wonderful photos! I just bought a bunch of pomegranates from Israel this afternoon. They don't look as perfect on the outside as yours do, however.

Wow, do you take great pictures!!
I have so little idea of Israel, and really enjoyed these. I almost fell into my monitor looking at the halvah, the figs, and the salted & pickled fishies. Really, it's all wonderful and beautiful abundance. Thanks!

Just as I was about to go out to shop for dinner, I saw your excellent photos. yummm....fish, beans, pomegranetes...fresh and lush. Like you, I visit the local market of wherever I am. These markets are the stable point of my travels and I spend hours in them. Thanks Imec.

I do! I do! Everything is so clean & beautifully presented. I believe those are okra in picture #8 -- a big plus in favor of Israel.
Did anyone notice the men's suspenders (braces) in the cigarette picture? Is that a hot item over there?

Candy quarry is my pic! We have those in Germany too. Nothing at all like that here.

The figs look luscious...one of my favorite simple appetizers is a portion of fresh fig wrapped in prosciutto.

I rather doubt most Israelis and Palestinians eat much prosciutto, even non-observant Jews, or Christian Palestinians...
But one time I was studying in Italy there was a FIG TREE just outside the balcony of the residence where I was living. Fresh-picked figs in the Mediterranean don't need anything else, they are perfect.
No candy quarry for me, je suis gourmande de salé... The fish, the olives, the veg... and I want some Mediterranean flatbreads.
imec, did you visit the historic Bauhaus architecture in Tel Aviv?

Gorgeous shots, thank you. I have never seen pomegranates so flawless looking, even the ones straight off the tree here. The variety of figs pictured appear similar to ones here as well. The figs I saw in Turkey were huge, huge.Almost too big but luscious none the less. Thanks again.

"imec, did you visit the historic Bauhaus architecture in Tel Aviv? " There was quite a bit of it near our hotel - I'm a bit of a fan. As for bread, here is a picture of a baker in the market and a bagel vendor in Jerusalem...

I once spent a month in Italy and often had figs fresh from the tree. Yes, they are perfect. Beautiful breads!
