This is an art expression that goes far back into history. More history and background here, including another shot of the chieftain's arm. There are entire websites dedicated to posting ones tattoos, such as this interesting example: or this more elaborate design: The impulse behind a tattoo can be frivolous or profound, out of a desire to commemorate something near to ones heart or philosophy, or from the human love of ornamentation. Do you have a tattoo, and are you willing to share it here?

I don't have a tat , never really wanted one. My Dad had a couple of small ones (heart with my mothers name inside ) My husband went overseas to work and got one much to my horror.I t is a circle of barbed wire on his upper arm , I dislike it and found it strange he would get his first one at 50 yrs of age having never showed any interest in getting one previously . Mid life crisis I guess

I definitely seem to evolve in non-tattoo circles, because I have never even had a friend with any sort of visible tattoo. Children of friends have a few piercings, however.

This is the only one I have -- got it for my 46th birthday. My skin is the kind that doesn't take tattooing well. This is a little carp on my right outer ankle. It was beautiful and subtle when put on, but faded badly. The person who "fixed" it screwed it up by closing in the tail fin and making it look cartoony. Still, I'm fond of it. The carp (or koi) is traditionally a masculine symbol. This one is from a 16th century Japanese print. It's slightly larger than in the picture & has a little more color. (& my skin is not that yellow)

The problem with young people today is that they all have tattoos.
When I was a boy the only people with tattoos were convicts, sailors and circus freaks. And that made sense – it was a warning to keep your distance if you knew what was good for you.

Bixa, if your skin is not that yellow, whom did you photograph?

You try putting your foot up on the end table, holding the camera out so it's hard to see the viewfinder, and then trying to twist your foot so the ankle bone is not casting a shadow from the lamp directly over it.
After that, when the picture comes out all ugly and over-exposed, work your magic to get it to appear lifelike.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS?

Well, at least you came clean with yours bixa. From your examples, it would seem you would have us believe it's a guy thing. Let's not forget the ever popular "tramp stamp"...

Coupe-crottes = turd slicer

I have a small tattoo on my left shoulder, I'll take a picture and show you. It's only fairly small and black with a little bit of blue. I got it 12 years ago and have never regrettet it, it is part of me and kind of symbolizes some life change (for the better) I went through then. I still love it, unfortunately it's a bit faded, I might have to get it re-done.

imec, your tattoo washes off? I've had those kind before too. I don't have one, but have had a bf who had some, I liked them. I would like one though, have been thinking of getting one (or two) for some time now. Something like this on my shoulder: I sometimes put on a witch one just for fun. They can look very real, and last quite a while.

deyana, the one in the picture is done with an airbrush. The have various stencils which they place over your skin and then spray on different coloured paint with an airbrush. They're a bit more durable than the transfer kind - but they are very easy to remove when you're ready. Have a look how they do it on this site: www.tattoosfornow.com/Maybe get one when you're in Montreal: www.adrenalinetattoos.com/en_henna_gallery.htmlThey do airbrush tats and henna as well as the real thing.

imec, I'll have to check that out. There is a real good tattoo place in the city near me too, it's quite busy too, seeing as it's a University town with lots of young people. but I bet they have more experience with them in Montreal. I'm familiar with henna too, I've had various henna ones in the past.
HappyT, I like your tattoo.
