I thought I had a very old bottle of Strega but it turned out to be Galliano . I really don't know what to do with it as I don't like an aniseed flavour. It is a lovely bottle shape.

I don't like aniseed flavour either, Tod, but there is something you can do with pastis, which is based on aniseed.
Cook big shrimps and clean them. Fry some garlic in olive oil, add the shrimps to heat them, pour on a bit of pastis and light it. The alcohol burns off but the taste of plants and whatever else they put in pastis remains. This is really good, even for people like me who don't like aniseed.
Adding that I just looked up Gal liano and it seems the main taste after aniseed is vanilla, so I don't know how tasty that would be. But if you have any pastis...

When I get tired of a liqueur, I find that it normally redeems itself poured over vanilla ice cream.

That is a really good tip bjd - I don't have Pastis and have finished off that bottle of Fee-vert which did turn the soda water milky to some extent. You have reminded me of another seafood recipe that called for some alcohol to be added - think it was crayfish. I have an idea it was in that big cookbook called The Cookery Year. I don't know what happened to my copy but haven't seen it for sometime.

The first bottle of beaujolais tasted of nothing, just an ordinary table wine. I bought a better quality today at Monoprix (2nd bottle 50% off), so it had better taste better.

My neighbor had us over and he made us a "Moscow Mule" which is really decent vodka mixed with homemade Ginger Beer he was proudly premiering! I generally don't go in for homemade cocktails but this was so refreshing that I had a second. Right next door dancing...

I bought some conversion juice this week as it was being promoted at the supermarket. What on earth is conversion juice, you might wonder. I didn't know either, but I found out. When a 'normal' farmer wants to change from traditional agriculture to organic cultivation, there is a three year transitional period before the products can be labelled organic. This is the conversion time, hence conversion products. I bet they could sell even more if the previous product was renamed "pesticide juice."

My lovely young neighbors whom I adore bought up a variety of green coffee beans from different countries and roasted them. They gave us 3 different vacuum sealed bags of them. One is a a Japanese variety, another Ethiopian and the other Brazilian. I have only tried the Ethiopian one and it is delicious.

Today I drove a motor vehicle for the first time since selling my car! This free and easy day took me to stock up on a dozen or so bottles of my favourite white wine - Riesling! It is not easy to find so when I found a fairly good source I go a bit mad. I must have bought 4 or five different wine estates offing, but last time I bought some the Groote Post by Darling Hills Winery came tops for me.

I wish I could find some here but the imported wines are very scarce these days. When we spent the day at Eguisheim outside of Colmar, I bought a bottle of one of the most equisite rieslings I have ever tasted. This was it: If you find some in Paris please let me know where so I might try next time in Paris.

I'm sure it can be found, but Parisians do not drink all that much Riesling (too bad for them!) -- they tend to prefer white wines from western France. But there are enough Alsatian food shops in the city that the search would not be too arduous. A real summer sundowner on a hot day! That is the only way I drink Vodka. I like the Polish vodka and keep it in the deepfreeze part of my fridge. Must have huge iceblocks in the glass to keep the drink very cold. I've got tomato juice but no vodka at the moment.

We also have something similiar to the Bloody Mary here, a Caesar, the difference being clamato juice instead of tomato juice. (I also sometimes add tomato juice to my beer)

Mich, because of Canadian friends, I've had the pleasure of a Caesar a couple of times. My dad used to put tomato juice in beer sometimes. He called it "red beer". Try it with V8 -- I think you might be converted.

( He used to take me "clamming", on some early mornings. He always knew the tides high or low.) One of my favorite memories.

One of my earliest memories actually, our weeks at our cottage outside the Provincial Park on the shore. Apparently I loved them so much my parents found me under the table with a bottle of them. We did not rake for them, we were told to watch for the air plops in the sand and then we each had our pail and shovel and would race and start digging.

Red beer was a thing I associated with old men as they were the only ones I ever saw order one here. Quite popular at one time in NW Washington and Lower Mainland BC I understand.
