Hope I don't wind up paying the insomnia price for that cup tonight!

I read recently that something like 30% of people are not at all affected by caffeine, and I'm one of them. I have always been jealous of people whom coffee wakes up in the morning. It does nothing for me, and if I am still sleepy, I stay sleepy. On the other hand I have the benefit of being able to enjoy one or more espressos after dinner and be able to sleep with no problem at all.
Actually, the main effect on my life is that I almost never drink hot drinks (even though they taste fine) because I was never conditioned to want coffee in the morning. And since coffee does not perk me up, there's little point in drinking it in the middle of the day.
I consider it a handicap, but not a serious one.

I can go days without having a cup of coffee in the morning and it doesn't bother me. A lot of people who drink coffee on a daily basis and then go without complain of headaches and other presumably side effects. That has never happened to me. For me, it's a ritual and I suppose it perks me up. I do know that if I have more then one cup I feel the difference and it's not very pleasant. I babble and feel jittery and can't sit still. Years ago, I drank much more coffee but one cup in the morning suffices. In the summertime I drink iced coffee that's made by a cold brewing process and I buy a bottle of the brew sold in most groceries. I always prefer a French dark roast over any of the others offered.

A nice chilled rose from Provence. Perfect on a hot summer evening. Very reasonably priced as well. I have a feeling this may be my go to beverage this summer.

Nice Casimira, that reminds me that I have a bottle of rose from Provence left in the wine cellar! I had a few glasses of sauvignaon blanc with some tonic water this afternoon, it was so hot out.

I have never heard of mixing or adding tonic water to wine. Club soda yes, making it a spritzer. I have tried on many, many occasions to drink tonic water as many people drink gin and tonic but I just can't acquire a taste for it. (I also read that tonic water has a high caloric content based on the amount of sugar it contains) I am drinking a nice chilled Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. After 5 hours of packing boxes and hauling I was ready for it when I got home.

Martini Bianco was on sale at the supermarket, so I bought another bottle. I have no idea when I will ever drink it or offer some to guests.

I have Martini Extra Sec for gin. I'm sure it must be in the speciality shops here but I have only ever bought it in Luxembourg.

I bought two bottles of rosé today and tossed one of them in the refrigerator immediately. It's just a Pays d'Oc but one of the better ones. I don't think the first one will last through the evening.

(I also read that tonic water has a high caloric content based on the amount of sugar it contains) I am the opposite, I do not like club soda but do like tonic water. I always buy diet tonic water (slim tonic in Ireland) and occasionally add some to my glass when I want some wine but not a full glass of wine, this also reduces the calories as I have reduced the wine.

And you're warding off malaria, besides! I'm a fan of tonic, but have never tried it with wine, although now I'm curious.

I like a glass of something like three parts tonic to one part citrus juice (squeezed please!) as a hot-weather quencher.

Mixing wine with whateber is a crime that should be met with a huge penalty. 🤣🤣
Except in sangria.

Gin & tonic seems to impose itself on Sunday night after dinner. I have no idea why Sunday is the night.

Not in my glass now but a few nights ago I had a cocktail which was similar to a wine spritzer but with the addition of Byrrh which I had never heard about before. Anyway it was very , very nice. Kind of like an Aperol spritz but with a spicier flavour. It also links in to the discussions about quinine above. I did have a look earlier to see if I could get some but its quite expensive here ...maybe cheaper in France ? Info below en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byrrh

Not in my glass now but a few nights ago I had a cocktail which was similar to a wine spritzer but with the addition of Byrrh which I had never heard about before. Byrrh was very popular throughout France for most of the 20th century but has now retreated mostly to its region of origin in the Pyrénées. (The popularity was due to its "health benefits" thanks to the quinine, but marketing was always a problem in English and German speaking countries because it is pronounced just like beer/bier. Nowadays they would just change the name for various export markets, but that didn't occur to them back then.) Anyway, you can still find it in Paris if you know where to look. It's a bit less than 10 euros for a litre.

A small soon to be a tad larger snifter of Courvoisier cognac to self medicate and hopefully ensure a good nights rest from pre hurricane anxiety.

We had friends visiting last week after their hike in the Pyrenees. They brought some Jurançon wine called Montesquiou Amistad. Not as strong as most apéritif wines, but really nice. We also opened some red wine from the Tarn and some white wine from Bordeaux area, so there are various bottles around waiting to be finished.

Wine tasting is fun and can be educational. Just remember those opened bottles have at best a week before they become drain pours. Cheers!
