I'm having a nice glass of Port as an after dinner drink. It is something that I drink rarely, so that probably improves my impression tonight.

That sounds so civilized. I'm having a short glass of Las Californias citrica gin with Lillet Blanc, a splash of some kind of aperol-ish liquor & club soda. I'm having it for the reasons one is never supposed to have a drink, i.e., I deserve & need it.

I found a forgotten bottle of Beaujolais nouveau. Reputedly, it does not age well, so I found myself with an emergency. The situation is now under control.

He is ~ snatching triumph from the jaws of disaster!
Mick, just now seeing the gorgeous gin bottle. I've only had one Japanese gin -- Roku, which is quite nice.

I had cheap white tonight, a change from cheap red. It seemed quite good but I needed a substantial amount to offset the smoked herring.

But i put in the cellar a few dozens of Condrieu. They don't qualify as cheap though... I miss having dinner with you, i would have bought one !

I need one or two in case you show up one day !
When my cellar is full it holds 450 - 500 bottles.

There are a lot of serious wine cellars on the continent. Probably some in Blighty as well. My own cellar has a rack for about 100 bottles, and about 90 of them are still occupied... by empty bottles. I have thrown about 10 bottles away over the years but otherwise have not touched the rack in my cellar, so the bottles are at least 50 years old. (I've only been in this flat for about 30 years, but the bottles were already old when I arrived.) When you consider the fact that it is a very modest building in a lower class part of town, people clearly took their wine cellar seriously back then. My grandfather had a serious collection (I thought) in his village, but I doubt that he even had 50 bottles total.

We had a SA wine, cabernet sauvignon. Meh. Now opened a Dordogne wine. Splendid. But i had to empty the first bottle to open the second one...
So typos may have an explanation.. Hips.

I finished my Australian wine yesterday. Won't get any more until my next trip to Luxembourg, where "foreign" wines are easier to find than in France. After all, 95% of the wines are foreign there.

Just finished a perfectly lovely martini. It matched this strange day of on/off rain culminating in walking the dogs in thick fog. Mombasa Colonel's Reserve over miniature ice cubes with the last of the extra dry vermouth garnished with two California black olives.

We are drinkng a bottle of Saint-Chinian, a red (grenache/mourvedre/carignan) wine from the Languedoc area of France. I was given a couple of bottles on my recent trip to Toulouse. In the past years we had a lot of wine from some work I did for a friend, but that has pretty much run out now. We don't have a cellar in this house anyway so there is no point in stocking up.

I used the present tense because it takes us a few meals to get through the bottle so it's an ongoing situation.

Ee jad a fantastic bbq and i opened a few bottles of Luberon wine. 6 euros a bottle and very good. We drank 5 of those. Which seems ok since we were 10. But we had 2 magnums before. And Marie doesn't drink. So it comes down to one bottle each. Difficult job, but i never back away in front of difficulty. Tonight water please.

I covet that Leffe! Not drinking this right now (it's not even 11 am here), but this may interest some of you. I was reading an on-line article about dry sherry & came across something called The Bamboo, which calls for dry sherry and dry vermouth. I have both on hand -- the sherry because I read an recommendation for substituting it for dry vermouth in a martini. This was not good advice. At any rate, I made the Bamboo & found it okay, but boring. It did have possibilities, though, so I made another one the next night & enhanced it with an ounce of Martin Miller gin. Much better. I've named my version "The Bamboozle".
