Rue Faidherbe in Lille has seen its share of strange displays. Ever since Lille was selected as a European cultural capital in 2004, it has continued to decorate the street that leads from the old Lille-Flandres train station to the City Hall. In 2004, it became a street of Hong Kong with a wild display of Chinese neon. In 2006, it became a triumphal pathway of giant jeweled elephants. This year duing the Europe XXL operation devoted to Eastern Europe and Turkey, Russian artists have taken over rue Faidherbe... and the demon babies are on parade. ... and that is just the tip of the Europe XXL iceberg.

What will they think of next?! This is not as lush as the Hong Kong or Indian Lille displays you've showed us in the past, but I trust there will be more to come.
Are the babies fiberglass? And what are those little white figures in the last photo?

Gad -- once you told me it became so obvious! I was looking for art everywhere. I thought those were little white figurines of people.

I don't know what the babies are made of (probably fiberglass or some such), but they appear to be covered with tightly stretched plastic (I assume this because I saw a few minor bubbles on the surface of some of them). I can imagine the forms being hollow and some sort of vacuum process having been used to tighten the surfaces.

They're extremely interesting -- what a concept!
Are they officially "the demon babies" or is that your name for them?
(hope you're having a great time!)
