Switzerland has voted (narrowly) by referendum to ban the burka and the niqab today. That makes at least 10 European countries that have done this so far. It will certainly take at least another 20 or 30 years to figure out if this was the right thing to do.

I shall never know then.
Might coincide with the EU finishing vaccinations...

I guess we shouldn't be coordinating with the WHO to send millions of vaccines to the 3rd world.

In any case, it is rather ironic to ban face coverings at a time when masks are obligatory just about everywhere in Europe. One of the first things I noticed in France was how women wearing a hijab + a face mask look at first glance like they are wearing a niqab.

Good point about the timing. Before covid, the bank I use always had a sign saying you weren't allowed in if wearing a ball cap or sunglasses. Innocent times.

Along the east coast of Australia everyone spends time at the beach. Young Muslim woman could be seen standing in the surf fully clothed and wearing head and face coverings. A young women had a bikini business and started making "Burkinis"... a garment like a track suit which covered the ankle to neck rule, and had a fitted hood and a mid-thigh skirt.
The fabrics were bright and light and they became a huge hit even with many non-Muslim women wearing them as a skin-cancer precaution, and Muslim women and girls could enter the swimming competitions and public swimming baths.
Just a little chink in the armour, but it might let in more light.
